Annie and Owen Evans with their five children Carol (Dougherty), Rena (Butel), Wendy (Dougherty), Owen and Richard had a lovely life in the 'White Sow Valley' Wedderburn. Central Otago. Owen worked for Mrs Winnifred Smith on her Farm called 'Lustleigh" for 12 years. The little cottage we lived in and had such a wonderful childhood is now gone.
A government nursey for rearing trees was started in the White Sow Valley. The settlement of this valley quickly followed. The education board endeavours to give maori names to as many schools as it can, but on this occasion the board made a laughable blunder. A school was built and called the White Sow Valley school in 1886 and thinking that the Swinish cognomen would sound better in maori. The members of the board got a moari dictionary and turned up the words - white - 'Ma" - a deep valley - "Mato" - sow - "rui" and thinking only of sow, the female pig, it never struck them the the "rui" translated was the verb "to sow" seeds and changes "White Sow Valley" into "Ma-rui-mato" which translated is "To sow the white deep valley with seeds" .
Annie's Mother Margaret Griffiths always addressed her letters to Maruimato Valley Wedderburn.
While living here Annie was in the Wedderburn drama club. Before the family shifted to Alison Lane (working for Jim Cromb) the drama had a show, supper was served during which the president of the club said how sorry they were to lose Mrs Owen Evans and asked her to accept a parting gift tp keep her memory of her time with the Wedderburn Drama Club. She thanked Mrs Evans for what she herself had done, and also her generosity in 'lending' her daughters whenever the cast required the services of a young girl. In replying Mrs Evans said how much she had enjoyed her time with the club and she wished them well.
