Foster Carers Needed
WE NEED YOU!!!!!!
Greys4Pets are urgently in need of responsible people willing to take a greyhound into their home for a period of 3 - 5 weeks to teach them what life is like after racing.

Qualifications

Foster Carers must have a genuine love for animals, a fully fenced yard ( council regulated height) and be prepared to spend a little time to teach and re-educate the greyhound on how to go up and down steps, get him/her used to things such as children, vacuum cleaners, the TV, other small animals such as cats, dogs and caged birds, and in general, to become a domestic pet.

Cost

There is absolutely NO cost to the Foster Carer.
Food will be supplied by Greys4Pets and also accessories such as lead, collar and muzzle and winter coat.

How often

Greys4Pets do not expect Foster Carers to take one greyhound after another.
If Foster Carers feel they need a break in between dogs, that's fine, you can phone us at any time you feel you would like to take another greyhound into your home.

Why do we need Foster Carers

Foster Carers make sure everything goes smoothly for the family when a greyhound is rehomed, and so they can enjoy their new family member knowing that someone has taken the time and patience to get it used to everyday surroundings.

Another reason why we need as many Foster Carers as we can get, is because a lot fall in love with their foster greyhound and end up keeping it themselves.

The last and most important reason, is that the more Foster Carers we have, the more of these wonderful, loyal animals can be rehomed and find a life of love and contentment.

Your headline
After the greyhound has left foster care we have it desexed, teeth scaled and  vet checked.
All this is done for a once only fee of $250.00 to the new owners and includes: collar, lead and muzzle and ongoing help (if required) for the rest of the dog's life. The next step in the program is to introduce the animal to its new home.  This usually goes off without a hitch  and the family and pooch quickly settle into a mutually satisifying relationship.

A Foster Carer's Story

We started foster caring over 10 years ago and since then have lost count of the many beautiful greys that have been a part of our family. When we started we had 2 retired greys of our own, for us the greyhound was simply one of the best breeds we had ever owned, the dogs were very gentle, non aggressive and great couch potatoes. When we took our dogs out in public, people would always talk to us and want to know more about the breed, The sight of the muzzle misled people to believe they were vicious, how wrong could people be?  When greyhound rehoming arrived in Queensland, we just knew we had to help and become a part of this and introduce the greyhound as a great pet.
After greyhounds are born they are moved into paddocks at around 3 months of age to run freely and live there until they are taken to be "broken in" at around 12 months old, this is when they are taught to chase and a decision is made as to whether they will race or not. This is when a foster carers job can start. We received many greys at around this age and re-educated them to a life as pets. Many of these greys have seen little life outside of a kennels, so the T.V., vacuum cleaner and the outside world are all new things to understand and the ability to roam freely around the house and yard. Fortunately when you receive a grey it has learnt many habits from its early life that can make it so much easier for you. They travel well in cars, can be handled very easily, walk well on a lead, are sociable with other dogs and are used to being fed and taken to the toilet at regular times.
The foster carer will introduce the grey to a home environment, and as many things as possible e.g. children, small animals, cats, traffic, pizza and the couch!
The average time to nuture your grey from a race dog to a couch potato is around 4-8 weeks and we found it to be very rewarding experience, yes you do get attached to your greys, but remember as one finds a home many more are awaiting that opportunity and a few weeks work by you will make a family happy for life.
