Bachata is a form of music and dance that originated in the countryside and rural marginal neighborhood of the Dominican Republic. It’s subjects are usually romantic especially with tales of heartbreak. Bachata grew out and is still closely related to the Pan Latin - American romantic styles called Bolero. Over time it has been influenced by Merengue. A fast paces danceable music also native to the Dominican Republic. And a variety of Latin American guitar styles from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Columbia.
Derived from the Latin American transition of the guitar music, Bachata emerged in the 1960’s. While popular radio filled the air waves with Merengue and Salsa, Bachata musicians were forced to develop their own system of producing and distributing their music.
Juan Luis Guerra won a Grammy in 1992 for his album Bachata Rose. Allowing Bachata to gain legitimacy and international recognition. The Bachata that has gain popularity is produced with electric instruments and exhibits masterful use of the guitar. It’s often fast than it’s predecessors, and is very danceable.
In recent years Dominican Television Station has produced vastly popular Bachata Dance Contests for Broadcast. In 2004, The Dominican group called Aventura is probably the best know Bachata group Worldwide, it’s single “Obsession” having dominated for a long time radio play both in major United States Latino Markets, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
