Youth Hostels/Homes
Roman Catholics (St Annes?) had a youth hostel/home? in Pinfold in the early thirties, for children who were refugees from the Spanish Civil War, and they played games of football against local schools. e.g. Oakworth. school. Ref Mr. Wildman 71 Goose Cote Lane
, Keighley
Catholics
The fictional detective either Father Dowling or Father Brown, I’m sure I’ve read somewhere was based on a priest at St. Annes
Springfield
Mills
There is a tale that Springfield Mills had 4 clock faces originally, but when someone refused permission for a bridge or footpath somewhere, the owners had one face removed, so they could not benefit from it. Ref Harry Whitehead, Rose Meadows, Fell Lane
Marriners Mills
Legend has it, there was a tunnel from Marriners House at Woodhouse? possibly Throstles Nest on Dawson Road
, down to the mill on Marriner Road
. Recent unconfirmed info has it that the tunnel was still in use, at least until the second world war.
Marriners Mills
Legend also has it that the family had built a underground maze at the far end of dawson Rd, where it meets Woodhouse Drive, and that when a building was demolished in the early 60’s, it was uncovered and local children used to play in them, more recent information seems to point to them being air raid shelters.
