Keighley & District Bus pictures
I am sure someone will correct me when I say over the years there have been many different names associated with Keighley Buses. I would love to hear from someone who can give me a brief history to place on this page.
Thank you to Keighley Bus Club on Lord Street, who loaned me the pictures to put on our site.
A BIG BIG thank you goes to Trevor Leach who has given me all the information required to add the captions on this page. Thank you so much Trevor.
A montage of Yorkshire Woollen District buses; the company was based in Dewsbury.
This picture was taken in the Bus Station,it shows a Bristol K type double decker with Eastern Coachworks body, new 1946-9. This photo is pre-May 1954 as it carries the original fleet number, but it isn't close enough to specifically identify.1
. WW 7097. West Yorkshire 402. A 1928 Leyland Titan TD1 with Leyland 51 seat open staircase body (with side gangway upstairs). This is when it was quite new as it has a roller blind destination display; they soon had "Bible board" indicators fitted over the existing indicator.
WW 7098. As photo 3 but West Yorkshire 403 (with side gangway upstairs). It is followed by a Tilling Stevens single decker. Both these double deckers (402/3) were transferred to York in 1935 to replace the trams there.
MWY 231. This was EUG 20, a 1955 Bristol LS5G with Eastern Coachworks body. Allocated to Harrogate & then Bradford, it only came to Keighley in September 1958 until 1961. The photo isn't necessarily whilst it was at Keighley, unless it is known for certain that it is a Keighley driver standing in front.
WW 4639. West Yorkshire 341. A 1928 Leyland Lion PLSC3 with Leyland 31 seat body.Never allocated to Keighley; it was at Bradford from new until 1933 and, again, this must be an early photo as it still has a roller blind indicator.
As the caption says. Eastern Counties 20 seat body. Photo must be taken during the War as it has white edging to the front wings and headlight masks. The Riddlesden terminus then was at the Willow Tree.
Can't quite read the registration, but one of OWY 427-31, Keighley-West Yorkshire KDX 39-43, Bristol LD6B Lodekkas with 60 seat Eastern Coachworks bodies, new 1955 & withdrawn 1971/2. This photo is taken later in life as the indicator has been altered; this was done in 1963-6. It is at Thwaites terminus.
An unidentifiable Bristol LS6G coach of West Yorkshire, numbered in the range CUG 6-20. These were new in 1953-5 and had Eastern Coachworks 39 seat bodies.
FWX 831. Keighley-West Yorkshire K738, later KDB 10. New 1948 with an Eastern Coachworks 55 seat body (with side gangway upstairs). It was withdrawn in 1963. I've seen this photo before; it's taken in October 1952 after the bus had been overhauled and is outside the Central Repair Works of West Yorkshire at Harrogate.
.BWW 153H. Keighley-West Yorkshire KSRG 95, later 2295; a 1969 Bristol RELL6G with Eastern Coachworks 53 seat body. This view is taken between 1969 and 1971.
JWU 886. As the caption says. (This particular bus was never allocated to Keighley)
WT 7101. Keighley Corporation 5. 1924 Straker-Squire Trackless. Ended up as a living caravan near Grassington; rescued by Stanley King and housed by Peter Black down Lawkholme Lane for some years. Then went to the Bradford Industrial Museum. Now with KBMT.
YWY 514G. West Yorkshire CRG 13, Bristol RELH6G coach with Eastern Coachworks 47 seat body, new 1969. The view is taken at Chester Street, Bradford and the bus spent most of its life at Bradford depot - it was never allocated to Keighley.
. CWX 671. Ah, yes. I owned this from 1966 until 1993. New to Keighley-West Yorkshire in 1938, it is a Bristol K5G which had an Eastern Coachworks body. It was rebodied in 1950 with the present body by Charles Roe of Leeds. Withdrawn by West Yorkshire in 1963; rescued for preservation and has attended veteran vehicle rallies ever since. I sold it to Keighley & District Travel in 1993 and it's now owned by a former K & D Director. Still attends local events.
It's a JWY registered Bristol KS6B with Eastern Coachworks 55 seat body. Could be JWY 230 (West Yorkshire DB 62) which came to Keighley in November 1964 and stayed until July 1966. (It's after 1962 as the Institute's burnt out in the background). Other contenders are JWY 222 (DB 58) from 1/11/65 to 31/3/66), JWY 228 (DB 60) from 1/10/65 to 31/7/66) or JWY 229 (DB 61) from 1/10/65 to 31/7/66.
. Looks like 953 BWR, which was Keighley-West Yorkshire KDX 139, a Bristol Lodekka FS6B with Eastern Coachworks body new 1962. Ran until 1976.
A Leyland National at Stanbury, in the last days of West Yorkshire, 1986-9.
B92 SWX. New to West Yorkshire (1845) in 1984. Leyland Olympian with Eastern Coachworks body. Came to Keighley & District in 1990 and renumbered 385. It's still in the fleet, but now painted yellow and used solely on school services.
LWR 424. New as a double deck bus, West Yorkshire Bristol KSW6G with Eastern Coachworks body. Cut down for use as towing bus at Bradford 1969 and subsequently preserved. This view is outside the "old" KBMT on Dalton Lane but the bus is not preserved by KBMT and is not based at Riverside Museum.
LWR 410. New as West Yorkshire CUG 5 in 1952. Bristol LS6G coach with Eastern Coachworks 39 seat body. Later renumbered as EUG 5; the photo is taken between February 1963 and December 1964, but it is on the forecourt of West Yorkshire's Harrogate depot - the vehicle was never allocated to Keighley.
. G435 MWU. New as Yorkshire Coastliner 435 in 1990. Leyland Tiger with Plaxton body. Came to Keighley & District as no. 250 in 1994 and became the "flagship" Northern Rose coach for a time. Transferred to Harrogate & District in 1999.
HWW 879. New as West Yorkshire 790 in 1950. Bristol K6B with Eastern Coachworks body. This was allocated to Keighley from new. The photo is taken on the Keighley-Leeds (31) service, before 1954 as it was renumbered DB 52 in May 1954.
RYG 765R. West Yorkshire 1473, Leyland National new 1977. Painted into a gold livery in 1978 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of West Yorkshire. The photo is taken on the Stray at Harrogate. The bus went round all the WY depots and was at Keighley for a month in July 1978.
KDG 26 on a wedding duty with Keighley & District Travel. (see note 15)
KDG 26 at Keighley Bus Museum.
OWT 776M. West Yorkshire 1403, Bristol RELL6G with Eastern Coachworks body. New 1974. Never allocated to Keighley. Now preserved and this photo is of it in preservation.
. YJ04 LXS. K&D 709, Transbus Dart new 2004. Standard bus for the local services. The Zone livery is likely to start to disappear shortly in favour of the new green & blue livery.
. M924 UYG. New as Yorkshire Coastliner 424 in 1995. Volvo Olympian with Alexander body. Came to Keighley & District in 2000 and numbered 924. Unfortunately burnt out 7/01 and scrapped.
Standard K&D Volvo B10BLE with Wright body. Looks like 568, X568 YUG, new 2000. Still in K & D fleet, but now in current livery of white & blue, without the "big K" on the side.
The pic was taken at the finals of the National PSV Darts Finals when Keighley reached the last four for the only time, it was 1990 and held in Cheam.
The players were back L to R: Bernard Moules, Harry Hull, ?, Dennis Butterfield. Front L to R John Armitage, Ray Bolton, Wally Granger and Tim Veazey.
The photo of three people was the presenting of the Kevin Pybus Memorial Trophy to the Keighley Sunday Alliance, it was taken at the Timothy Taylor Pub. In the picture is Eddie Presland (Sunday Alliance ), Ray Bolton and Roy Derbyshire can't remember the exact year be about 1994ish. Kevin Pybus was a fitter in the bus garage and died aged 34 he was secretary of the Hope & Anchor soccer team.
Hope this is of some help
Ray Bolton
Finally, on the Burnley 5 a side photo, 1985, top left hand corner, Alan Lonie is now the K&D Training Manager, whilst Russell Revill is Managing Director (Operations) for Transdev Blazefield, which includes K & D. The boys done good!
