The inaugural meeting of the N/W sub-Branch, then called Ulverstone, was held in October 1996 and chaired by the State President, the late Laurie Tyler OAM. Of the eleven foundation members, only two are still involved, but a few of those who joined by the end of 1996 remain as members. The first president was Lloyd Costello and the secretary/treasurer was Phyll Voss. Many of the members attended the State Christmas function at Cressy that year.

The sub-Branch was re-named North-West early in 1997 and meetings began to rotate between Wynyard, Burnie, Ulverstone and Devonport. Obviously the committee was a ‘with it’ group because they applied for and received the first DVA funded computer in April ’97. In the same month we received our first flag, paid for and presented by the Devonport RSL. The presentation was attended by NM&BVAA national president, Richard Webber.

The sub-branch has raised funds to erect memorial plaques in ANZACPark at Ulverstone in 1999 and Smithton in 2004. Sub-Branch members organised the dedication of these plaques and provided visitors with afternoon tea. Our members have laid wreaths at ANZAC and Remembrance Day services throughout the North-West, have donated books to local High School libraries and have visited and helped other members when they were ill. We obtained a DVA grant for social outings in 2006 and have taken bus loads of members and friends to Launceston, Zeehan, Sheffield and Mole Creek for fun days out. We have had some excellent BBQ meetings at ShropshirePark in Ulverstone and recently donated to the appeal for building a memorial at Sungei Siput Estate in Malaysia.

AUSTRALIANS IN THE MALAYAN EMERGENCY
Australia's involvement in the Malayan Emergency began in 1950 with the arrival of RAAF aircraft and personnel in Singapore. The aircraft were Dakota transports and the Squadron was No 38 Sqn.Their mission was to cooperate with the Royal Air Force in the growing campaign against Communist Terrorists in Malaya. No 1 Sqn RAAF, equiped with Lincolns arrived at Tengah in July 1950, and they flew bombing missions until 1958. No 2 Sqn RAAF then arrived with Canberra Bombers, and RAAF Sabres from 77 Sqn arrived soon after, deploying from Butterworth

About 7,000 Australian Navy, Army and Air Force personnel served during the Emergency, and events in Korea overshadowed the happenings in Malaya. Royal Australian Navy parcipitation in the Emergency began in June 1955 when HMAS s Quadrant, Arunta, Anzac, Warramunga and Tobruk exercised in Malayan and Asian waters with the British Far East Fleet. Two months later these ships were  relieved by Queensborough and Quickmatch.

Although the Army had maintained a small observer and specialist communications presence in Malaya since 1950, -between 1955 and 1960, troops from the 1st,2nd and 3rd battalions, Royal Australian Regiment, complete with supporting arms, were committed to the Malayan campaign.

THE INDONESIAN CONFRONTATION
Following the failure of a revolt in Brunei, Indonesia declared a "confrontation" policy, and in April 1963, Indonesian guerillas started raiding the North Borneo territories of Sabah and Sarawak. In October 1964, the 3rd Battalian captured 50 Indonesian guerillas in Malaysia. The Battalion then went to Borneo followed by the 4th Battalion: the 3rd and 8th Battalion also served in the  area of Sarawak/Brunei/Sabah.
The Australian Navy also participated in this campaign, with No 16 Minesweeping Squadron doing the patrol duties from May 1964. HMASs Teal, Ibis, Hawk, Curlew, Snipe and Gull were prominent in this field, whilst also engaged,  were Sydney, Vampire, Vendetta, Duchess and Derwent.
The period for Active Service forthis area was 8th december 1962, to 11th of August, 1966. During this conflict, seven Australians were killed in action and ten wounded. The Confrontation formerly ended in August 1966.

Please include those that served during Konfrontasia. We, the Minesweeper crews, seem to be the forgotten. I suggest you read "Stand by to board" by J.D.Fostrer
