The POW Camp at Sandakan held 2,434 Australian and British servicemen. All except 6 Australians, who escaped into the jungle, died as a result of the despicable treatment of their captors.

The National Malaya & Borneo Veterans Association AustraliaTasmania Incorporated….NMBVAATAS,

will conduct its annual pilgrimage to Ipoh, Malaysia from 04JUN12 to 11JUN12.

After the Emergency & Confrontation commemoration services have been completed, NMBVAATASINC members will proceed to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, from 11JUN12 to 18JUN12.

We will visit Ranau, Sabah, the area where Australian & British POWs were assembled after being forced to march from Sandakan during WW2. The details of the marches and the horror of the POW incarcerations at Sandakan, during, and well after WW2 finished, has been described as the worst atrocity ever committed by Japanese Forces.

From 18JUN12 to 21JUN12 – the NMBVAATASINC party will return to Kuala Lumpur for R&R before returning to Australia.
