ABOUT THE MAINE COON

ABOUT THE MAINE COON

The Maine Coon is the largest breed of cat in the world some reaching up to 13+kgs,they are one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. They are generally regarded as the native cat of Maine. There are allot of stories about how the Maine Coon came about the most popular being a mating between a semi wild cat and a racoon (which of course is impossible!!)but possibly where the name Maine Coon comes from.Another theory is that they came from 6 cats sent to Maine by Marie Antoinette when she was planning on escaping from France. Maine Coons were well established more than a century ago as a hardy handsome breed well equipped to survive harsh weather conditions.Nature is not soft harted so only the biggest brightest and best hunters survived to breed the Maine Coons we have today.

while Maine Coons are highly people orientated they are not overly dependant cats that constantly pester you for attention but prefer to hang out with thier people investigating and helping where they can. They are not as a general rule(although there are exceptions to this)lap cats but prefer to be next to you on the bed or couch due mostly to thier size.
