In 1911, The Royal Liver Friendly Society crowned it’s waterfront buildings in Liverpool with two  fabulous Liverbirds made from gilded copper. They overlook the Mersey from a height of 304ft , they are 18ft tall and have a wingspan of 12ft.

Myth has it that the ‘Liver’ once haunted the pool inlet and became the model for the  ‘Liverbirds’

History has an alternative suggestion

In 1207 King John gave the first Charter to Liverpool, the Kings Patron Saint being St John whose    Ancient symbol was an eagle, the seal makers being no great artisans modeled a bird that defies true identification

In 1668 The Earl of Derby gave a mace to the city engraved with a Liverbird, which is the Dutch name for a Water Pelican

Records of 1797 called this bird a Cormorant with a Sprig of Seaweed in it’s beak

It is said that the day the Liverbirds fly away, that will see the end of Liverpool

Southport Pier is the second longest in Britain , first opened in 1860 then extended to 4880 ft in 1868, it is now designated a Grade 2 listed structure and is the oldest surviving iron pier in the U K. As one of England’s classic resorts Southport offers an eclectic mix of beautiful beaches, traditional pier, along with Victorian and Edwardian architecture, Lord Street is one of the North West’s leading shopping destinations

National Wildflower Centre set in 35 acres of Victorian Parkland offers an innovative visitor centre where visitor’s can learn about wild flowers and how to create new places for them to thrive

Situated in a region noted for it’s timber framed buildings, Speke Hall is considered one of the finest examples of it’s kind.

It’s present form dates from the period 1490 ~ 1612, but there was an earlier house on or near the site of the present building.

The known history of the manor of ‘Speke’, or ‘Spec’ ( brushwood in Old English) goes back to the Domesday survey of 1086 which records that it was one of several properties held by Uctred in 1066.

The atmospheric interior of the house reflects many periods including Tudor, Jacobean and Victorian, with William Morris wallpaper in the Oak Parlour and some of the smaller rooms.

The Gardens remain in the spirit of their mid ~ Victorian designer Richard Watt

Scouse was brought to Liverpool by Northern European sailor’s, originally called Labskause, shortened to Skause then Anglicised to Scouse.

Originally sailor’s were called ’Scousers’ but with time all Liverpudlians became known as Scousers. ‘Scouse’ is the taste of Liverpool and remains a favourite regular dish of most families, including my own
