A new book, FOR A SHILLING A DAY (Bank House Books) tells the story of Private Alvin Smith of Burlington Farm, Lothersdale, who was killed on the Somme in 1916. He was one of hundreds of Craven lads who served with the Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding) in the First World War and his story may be of interest to researchers.

A review of the book in the Daily Mail is at

Thank you very much for looking into, and confirming, Ghandi's visit to the cotton mills. Following my initial enquiry a relative, of Percival Davis, his grand-daughter I believe, was also on the Antiques Roadshow showing the pictures of Ghandi and his letters of thanks to Percival Davis. This is a lovely piece of history which seems to have been hidden for so long, it shows how important a part Skipton played in the cotton industry at that time.
Again - many thanks for you interest and time!

Just to say that we have established that Gandhi did come to the area during the Imperial Conference in the early 30s. No doubt further information can be obtained from the local papers of the time.

I have recently seen a photograph taken at West Bradford (just north of Clitheroe)showing Ghandi visiting Mr Percy Davies, a Lancashire cotton mill owner. The caption said this was at the time of the cotton strikes which I presume was in the 1930s. Hence Ghandi was in this area of the country and may well have visited Skipton at this time. Don't know if this helps

I am in the process of writing up my grandmothers memories of her life in Skipton in the early 1900's. Her parents were both active members of the Adult School and the new Labour Party. She talks about visits by members of the Labour Party to her home, such as Mr Wedgwood Benn, O G Willy (?) and Mr Arthur Greenwood.
She also talks about a visit by Gandhi to the area - does anyone have any knowledge of a visit to Skipton by Gandhi or where I could find more information out about the Adult School?
Her notes are really interesting, describing her first day at work, aged 13 at Dewhursts Mill.
I would be really grateful for any information you may have or direction to a site or books that cover Skipton and this era so I can find out more.
Many thanks.
