The coins
It is believed that "Il Borgaccio" the Roman was from the city Rome and belonged to a noble Roman family. The area could have well been "il Borgo" a district in Rome. The Roman carried with him two gold roman coins that had been given to him by his father and before that his father's father. These coins were carried as a reminder of his family. The Roman , as story has it, indicated that the coins were given to his ancestor by the Emperor Constantinus I ( 306 - 337 AD). They were given to his ancestor ( Family Clan "gens") who it seems may have been a senator. It is believed that his origin is from the city Rome and his family was either in the Imperial court, Senate or Imperial Army, possbily a Roman General unfortunaely, this information has been lost in the past. What is known is that the Roman belonged to an important roman family. The importance of the coins is not understood at this time but further reseach may provide the answer.
There is no informtion for the period between 306 AD and 750 AD. It is only when we read of the Roman, from il Borgo, around 750 AD during the battles in Ravenna in 751 AD against the Lombards that the story seems to be recorded.
