This page is aimed to give you some idea of the work we do and shows a small selection of cats that we have cared for past and present.
Unfortunately these are just the tip of the iceberg, and we come accross new situations weekly.
By clicking on the photos you will be able to read a little about the different cats stories.
Please be aware some of these photos you may find distressing.
Leo
Leo was rescued when he was about 2 years old by the CP. Unfortunately he had been very badly treated and neglected. Sadly this had left Leo very nervous and untrusting of people, so needed a special home where he could recover and be a happy cat once more. As well as being very timid Leo also had a nasty skin condition as a result of lots untreated fleas bites and stress induced behavioural fur pulling.
Leo was lucky to find a quite home with no other pets where helives with his loving owner. Shortly after he was homed he was diagnosed with Feline Urinary Tract disease which can be very serious in male cats and as a painful condition would have certainly been making him very unhappy. Thanks to a medicated prescription diet and the fantastic support from the CP, Leo is making a very good recovery. He still goes through phases of behavioural fur pulling but on the whole his coat is looking good and with his special diet he is feeling so much better.
He is still very nervous but loves curling up on his owners lap for a nice cuddle and enjoys sunbathing and watching the birds from the window. He is a very affectionate chap and loves to play with his catnip mice and other toys at night while spending the day snoozing on the sofa – it’s a hard life but certainly a lot better than the one he had before the CP gave him the second chance that he so desperately needed.
Mischief and Pepper came into care painfully thin, tough only young themselves they had been used for breeding. They were unsure of attention and uable to eat normal size meals due to their condition. After weeks of careful feeding and spaying, the pair of sisters started putting on weigh and they now love everyone and their food. They are now a normal weight for their size and they have settled well into their new home.
Hercules - this chap came into care in poor condition, he's coat was a mess as he had been out for some time and he refused contact with us. He distrusted humans. After vet check and given time, the care and attention he needed, he started to trust us. He got more confident every day, until as you can in the photograph he became a cool, firnedly very loving chap. Who now thankfully has a wonderful home.
Benson & Winston came into care with appalling neck injuries. Collars had been put on them as kittens but never increased in size, they were now middle aged cats. The wounds were terrible, and the vet was unsure if they would heal. With time and lots of TLC the wounds began to heal. Unfortunately Winston kept scratching and re-opening his neck and we tried many methods to prevent this. Eventually his foster mum came up with a solution. Sports socks - She cut off the top of a sports sock and put it around his neck. The wounds have now completely healed.
Harry came into care with the most awfully matted fur. He had to have general anasthetic while the vet shaved it off. It will grow back and his new owner will be able to help him keep it in tip top condition.
Fat Jack was an enormous boy. He needed to be put on an immediate diet to help shed the pounds.
We received a call one very wet Saturday morning three kittens and a mum cat had been found in a derelict garage. Off two cp volunteers went to trap, Marg had carefully placed her kittens in the only dry spot in the garage and had looked after them wonderfully. With the finders and there family watching we had the easiest collection ever. Marg is such a good mum and trusts humans completely that from day one, even though the kittens had never been handled and they were about three weeks old, she stopped them if they hissed at us. She immediately allowed us access to the kittens and let us handle them free, including allowing us to deflea and worm the kittens and her. This wonderful mum and her some have been chosen and will be going off to their new home together shortly. Her other two kittens have been homed together and are settling in well.
Kittens Fred and Freda were very small when they came into care with a strain of the catflu virus. Sadly Fred ended up loosing his right eye. The pair have now found a new loving home together where they live as indoor cats.
Poor Jack Sparrow was knocked down by a car. He had to have an opperation his tail removed. He was in care for many weeks recovering, but has now gone to a new loving home.
Bernard has a skin condition which causes weeping sores all over his body if he is not fed on hypoallergenic food. We nursed him back to health, a long slow process and now he is in a loving new home
Beauty, very friendly young lady who came into care after her owners hadn't treated a leg injury, which apparently just happen!!!. Sadly the problem had been going on for several months and we had to remove her leg. We have since found out after testing that she had Fibrosarcoma, rare and v malignant tumor in her leg. She is doing really well though she does get tired as learning to walk on three legs is very tiring at first.
Goldie - This loving old chap was found in a very sad state. His mouth was in a very poor condition and sadly because his teeth he not been seen to in a very long time. Goldie had to have them removed. A couple of weeks after this had been done and Goldie was now not in pain his true loving character came to light. Goldie just loves everyone and likes lots of cuddles. This lovely boy now has a forever home.
These are just two of thirty-eight cats we took in from the same household. They were in appalling condition, all had stained brown paws and bellies from living in a house where they would walk and sleep in their own urine. We have tried to scrub the stains away but they aren’t coming off, they will eventually fade and disappear but in the mean time they are a constant reminder of the environment they were forced to live in.
Alley was found wandering the streets with severely ulcerated feet. His pads had to be removed and his paws bandaged up in order to give the tissue a chance to grow back. He is now fully recovered and living with a new family
Poor Chris! She came into care recently having been a stray, but started to worry everyone as she was loosing weight at an alarming rate. We were all stumped as she had a clean bill of health. Then her extra observant foster mum noticed what was wrong. She had eaten a cardboard real of cotton, which had got caught around her tongue, whilst the rest was being digested. During the tricky operation, she had 10 small incisions, but brave Chris pulled through. Chris is now well and is looking for a loving home.
Jelly
A very friendly tabby girl who was found in a garden when she was very small with two of her litter mates, sadly her mother had disappeared. The kittens not only had cat flu, (They were very congested and their breathing was very noisy), but sadly they had been also infected with Parvo Virus). Sadly her littermates did not make it. With lots of veterinary care and love she made it.. At times her legs are wobbly (hence her name) and her breathing is noisy, most of the time, even when she sleeps. She is a very friendly cat who has grown from strength to strength, who loves life, her family and her feline friends. She tries every thing, even if she has to have an extra rest from time to time to make up for it.
Benjamin, Peter and Jemima were born on a farm, and spent their first eight months without human contact. They were brought in to our branch and we spent time socialising them. Now they are all settled in to homes and have come to realise that people make great groomers!
Bonnie and Clyde are a beautiful pair of black and white cats, that were with us for far too long, over a year in fact.
It was not because they were mean or nasty, or because they were full of health problems or even misbehaved in the house. It was simply because Clyde is extremely shy and not suited to a lot of homes.
We are pleased to report that someone finally saw past his extream shyness and was prepared to give them a chance. They are now slowly settling into their new home. It will take a while, but will be very rewarding.
Spike was found wandering the streets, very skinny and in need of a bath! He was given the care he needed and now is living happily ruling over some very lovely humans!
Fern was one of our saddest cases. Her owner was ill and the neighbourhood children terrorised her. They kicked her over the fence as if she was a football. She came in a very scared cat understandably. We couldn’t get near her, she would hiss and scratch anyone who tried. But slowly her foster mum gained her trust and now she is like a different cat.
This was one of six kittens received in to us in awful condition. By the time this photo was taken, they had already started to show improvement. They are now in tiptop condition, and very little lasting damage has been caused. Sadly one of these kittens has had to have an eye removed due to the damage caused by neglect. We are amazed, as we thought they would all have very limited eyesight. They are true survivors!
This is Harvey. He came in to us very skinny after being abandoned by his owner. Harvey is missing a back leg but it doesn’t stop him whizzing round like a kitten!
Jack was one of three feral cats we caught in our humane traps and socialised. He now lives with a wonderful couple and realises that life indoors is much better
Casey was driven by her owners' miles from home and then left to fend for herself. She was very confused, luckily we received a call from some kind people who had been looking after her and now she is safe with us.
Feather was terrified of everything when she first came to us, she wouldn’t move from her bed and we were concerned she would end up with bedsores. But with time and patience as well as gentle handling she started to trust people again. This was a long process but a very rewarding one
This beautiful cat needed to be shaved as she was so badly matted her sides and back end felt like cardboard when we stroked her. The matts were pinching her skin and very uncomfortable. Since then her magnificent coat has grown back and now she loves being groomed in her new home
Nelson was a feral cat. We spent the time socialising him and now he is likes nothing better than sleeping on the bottom of the bed while the sun shines through the window
Poppy came to us as she had started wetting in the house. We suggested the owners gave her a litter tray to use as perhaps something outside had frightened her, but they didn’t want to make their house smell!
Bisto was found in a garden in the rubbish tip. She was too young to be away from her mum and we had to syringe feed her every four hours. Slowly we weaned her on to solid food and once she was independent enough she was found a loving new home.
Smudge had been missing for nearly a year when she was handed into a local vets following a car accident. Sadly the vet was not able to save her shattered front leg, but amazingly she had not suffered any internal injuries. She spent many weeks in care being looked after by one of our fosterers while she adjusted to life on 3 legs.
Bert – a handsome young black boy – who had been left behind by his owner with his brother (who was found after sadly kill in a RTA) had a large untreated abscess on his shoulder that had become infected and infested with maggots. He took a long time to heal and despite four inches worth of stitches. Bert recovered and has now been successfully homed.
