If you've homed a cat from us, we'd love to hear your stories, see your pictures and include them on this page - go on, we'd love to hear from you!
Sootie and Smudge stayed with us for quite some time before being adopted. This is what their new family had to say:
"I
just wanted to let you know that both Sootie and Smudge (father and son)
who we had from you back in August, are really very happy and settled
in. They are adorable cats and both very, very loving. After Smudges
early escape (4 days
after having him) he returned 2 weeks later very thin, but a completely
changed cat. No longer nervous and loves to be stroked and cuddled.
Both are very happy snoozing on their own blankets on our sofa at
night. I just thought I would let you know how
well they are and we are so glad that they have settled in so very
well!
Wouldn’t be without them! Many thanks"
From Sandy's new family:
"Hi
I just wanted to inform you all that Sandy has now settled in well with
life with us , I have found that he loves His Biscuits & could eat
for England!! Only thing we have found He is being s little fussy about
His meat, It has to be with Gravy, His favourite is Gourmet Perle with
Gravy or at least Whiskas with Gravy. So when Pat comes to do Her check
on how Sandy is There will be about 42 sachets of food in Jelly &
some Litter He is not to keen on !"
Nutley's new family sent us this lovely note and picture showing how settled he now is:
"During the week of
18th July, we helped 2 charities by adopting Nutley (2yrs old & timid/untrusting) from
Cats Protection and Ella (1yr old, outgoing/curious, formerly Fruitella) from
the RSPCA. We chose these 2 cats as the charities considered that they were
tolerant of other cats and we already had 3 girlie cats at home.
Within a week, they
were great friends and behaved like siblings, chasing each other around the
house and having playful pouncing on each other. Ella’s character is that of a terrorist,
tomboy.
They are both now
outside, thoroughly enjoying the safe back garden, the gardens of our
neighbours and the freedom that has given. The other cats have got used to them
and Nutley has
picked up another girlfriend, Jazz."
Thanks to them, two more cats have begun new, happy lives.
From Nala's new family:
She and Simba are pals (not best friends) but he treats her like a
slightly annoying little sister and she nicks his food! The world is now
her oyster as she has been happily venturing outside for a few months
now whilst we keep her indoors at night. Most days she disappears but is
always back for dinner or after a quick whistle up the garden. All in all she is very happy and very affectionate little thing, always politely jumping up on the bed to wake us up each morning.
When Smokey Joe (originally named Simon) came into our care he was a terrified older kitten who had not had much interaction with humans at all. His foster mum knew it would take lots of patience and understanding before he could learn to trust ...
Smokey Joe has been with his new family for just over six weeks now and he has settled in remarkably well, thanks they say for the most part to the wonderful advice they were given by his foster mum on how to help him settle in, as well as the booklet she gave them containing lots of tips on how to help shy cats adjust.
Here are some extracts from the emails Smokey Joe's new family have sent us:
1 May
We think he is settling in slowly. First day he spent in his igloo bed -
as far back as he could and wouldn't come out for any food - but when I
came down in the morning he had eaten all the food we left, had been to
the toilet in his litter tray, had managed to re-arrange a number of
items and appeared to have been playing with his toys.
This morning we got treated to his first vocals
- and he has started to show an interest in the fish on a string - we
are hoping he might chase it soon! and venture out of his igloo bed when
we are with him.
We are spending time with him - either talking
to him or talking to each other (and my daughter is even reading to him)
- he hasn't been hissing at us (yet) and we hope he will gain in
confidence as he feels more comfortable.
8 May
Smokey has now come out of the utility room and has been exploring the house.
He will play with us and is getting more used to us - but still will not come to us or let us stroke him.
He
sleeps in various parts of the house - under chests of drawers, etc -
rather than in his bed. And he seems quite active late at night.
We hope to continue making progress and getting to the stage where he will come to us and let us stroke him.
21 May
Smokey Joe seems to be settling well now. He will come and sit in the
living room in the evenings with us. He loves playing and we are able to
stroke him much more now and have even been able to pick him up a
couple of times. Although there are times when he just wants to be on
his own.
At the moment he seems to like sleeping under our bed.
We have some birds that have nested in our roof and the eggs have
hatched - so he spends quite a bit of time staring out of the window
just under where they are.
He seems comfortable around the house and he has just started exploring the garage.
We will stick to at least 5/6 weeks before letting him out - although he has recently started pawing at the windows.
12 June
We started letting him out last week - we needn't have worried about him
running off, because for the first day he wouldn't go through the door!
However, he has got braver - last week he mainly stayed in the back
garden - then earlier this week we couldn't find him in the back garden
and found him out the front - obviously not averse to a bit of jumping.
He
stays out for over an hour, but does come when we call him. Yesterday
he met a couple of the neighbouring cats. Bit of a stand off - bushy
tails and arched backs - but no fur flying.
He seems to be enjoying himself - although some of our house plants are suffering.
It just goes to show what can be achieved with time, patience and understanding, but mostly with love. We all thank Smokey Joe's new family for giving him the chance to lead a full and happy life!
Received from Tilly's new family:
"Just a quick email as promised to let you know how she is getting on. We have renamed her Tilly, and she has settled in really well. She was a bit quiet at first but now she is such a loving, purring cat! She can be very playful too and often chases our feet! We are both besotted with her and so glad we have her. Her coat is very nice now, its all thick and glossy- very different to when we first got her! We still can't believe someone would want to dump her, but in a way we’re glad they did as it means we got to have her!
She took a while to start eating properly but she has now put on weight and the vet said she is at a very healthy weight.
I have attached a photo of her snuggled up in her new bed!"
This is Holly; she was abandoned in a veterinary surgery during the Christmas period, hence her name! This is what her new mum has to say about her ...
"She will def get fatter as she is greedy but has got used to the routine already, she is a very gentle cat and even when she sits on us no claws appear at all!!! she has not even run away from our little boy,she is very content.
i would love you to do a success story as i would love to see it in writing, as i said to you in previous email she deserves a good life and i am glad i found her!!!"
Daisy and Bluebell (formerly Maisy and Jezebel)
This is what Maisy and Jezebel's new mum and dad had to say ...

Received from Boris' new mum ...
Boris has been with us for 2 weeks now and has quickly settled down as part of our family. There is no doubt he has 'attitude' but is also very affectionate and that makes him a real little character. He is gradually training us into the owners that he wants. We have got past the desperation for food stage which I guess comes from having to scavenge for himself for so long, and although the way to his heart is still through his stomach, I think he feels more secure now and does not gulp down his food at such an alarming rate. He likes a cuddle on his own terms and definitely like to be with us as he follows us around. He also likes his toys and plays like a kitten. We are not letting him go out yet and will not do for a few weeks yet but he responds to his name now and is ready and waiting to get out there. I think the other local cats are going to know all about it when he does, he and the local bruiser cat are already having words either side of the conservatory door windows.
Thank you so much for providing us with the opportunity to have Boris and the excellent work that you do to give cats like him the chance to live in a proper home as a loved pet..which he certainly is!
Dear Cats Protection,
We adopted Poppy and Joey (now Mikey) from you in April. We're so pleased to say they've settled in really well together, having not met before, and have really brought our home to life! Poppy was extremely nervous and sat in the corner shaking at first, but now bounds around the house chasing balls, shadows...and Mikey, she even for the first time went outside through the cat flap today, which is a great first step to her venturing outside, she's been too nervous so far. And Mikey, well he's a bundle of fun, he thinks he's half dog as playing fetch with a balled up piece of tin foil is his favourite game, and he actually brings it back, drops it in front of you and waits for you to throw it again. Full of mischief and incredibly affectionate. On Poppy's first outing today he followed her everywhere in the garden until she came back inside, it was so sweet. Here's a few pictures to show how well they're doing. Thanks so much for everything, we couldn't imagine having two more gorgeous cats.
Received from Pepper & Spice's (formerly Maggie & Minstrel) new family:
As promised, please find attached some of the latest photos of Pepper and Spice - I’m sure you will see quite a difference in them. They have proved to be exactly what we were looking for – very affectionate, lap cats with plenty of energy and curiosity. Thank you.
Just a quick update on Terry as we have had him a week now. He's settled in really well. He has been very affectionate and friendly since we got him home. The first couple of days he would scoot under a side table in the sitting room if anyone stood up or walked, but he soon found his confidence. He now has the run of the house and I think he has been into every nook and cranny in every single room. If I am sat down he is usually curled up on me somewhere. If I am on the laptop he curls up in the crook of my arm and watches the cursor on the screen. As long as someone is with him he is happy. He does cry if he gets left alone or if he can't find someone to be with, he is still a baby I suppose. I left him curled on the sofa yesterday whilst I picked my son up from playgroup and when we got back about 15 mins later he was still in the same position and hadn't moved so I think he is realising that if we go out we will come back and he hasn't been abandoned.
He has been so good. He has used his litter tray and had no accidents at all. I took him for his 2nd lot of vaccinations on Wednesday and everything was OK. The vet couldn't check his heart as he was purring so loudly and wouldn't stop! My older cat Pickle is becoming more used to him being around. Terry adores him and just wants to play and sniff him, (he must smell of outside), but Pickle is having none of that and Terry has had a couple of swipes for being cheeky. Pickle is used to living with other cats though and even let Terry sit near him on the sofa yesterday, so we are getting there.
Terry is so friendly and relaxed, he is great with my children and my little girl especially adores him. He joins us every night in her room when we are reading a bedtime story. He has charmed every visitor I have had this week by being so friendly and curling up on them for a sleep.
So all in all he is pretty much perfect and we all love him so much already.
As promised a few pictures of Shaun (who is now called Sonny). He has settled in very well and has brought us alot of joy and fun already. The picture of him on the window cill is him sleeping on a now collapsed tissue box, when he first arrived back here he used to be able to curl up inside, now he completely overflows it. As you predicted he has never slept on the bed we bought him but has found several other favourite places. The boys love him and Sonny loves being with them and he is also very tolerant! He loves it out in the garden and is rather cross that we only let him out when we are here, but we are never out all day. Regards Ruth
“I’ve always had a really soft spot for old cats, there’s something genuine and relaxing about oldies. I know many people won’t consider an old cat because they’ve got too many miles on the clock but I find them so loving, relaxed and I get so much out of giving them a home. I lost two of my oldies last year. It was heartbreaking both times. Bill and Molly were both such characters and I will always treasure the time I had with them, Bill wasn’t given a great outlook when I first took him on, he wasn’t expected to last six months but it was two and a half years almost when we lost him and he went peacefully at home. Rosie, the coordinator for Crawley, Reigate branch knows only too well how much I love old cats so when Kelsey (18 years old) came in to care she called me and let me know. She sounded perfect, another old cat who was unwanted, matted, tatty and in need of love. I jumped at the chance to have her and brought her home once she’d had the all clear from the vets. This little scrawny tortie and white old lady made herself at home straight away. I’m sure she’s stone deaf, she shouts and shouts at you until you pick her up, and then purrs like an engine. She wants nothing more than to sit on your lap or beside you, recently when she went back to vets for a weigh in she spent most of the day being carried around by the vet nurse. Kelsey is a hyperthyroid cat, I’ve had lots of those over the years, now she is on her tablets she’s gaining weight nicely. My daughter shares my passion for old cats and can often be found doing her homework with Kelsey sitting next to her making sure she’s doing it right! She’s such a lovely lady, and I am over the moon that I have the opportunity to give her a home for the rest of her days” “Henry is 22. He is a fine stamp of a cat, with big tiger paws and a certain presence about him. He sadly lost his home when his owner had to go in to care. At 22 there aren’t many people willing to give a cat a chance, and I don’t understand why. I would rather take on an oldie than a kitten, but everyone is different. If I hadn’t been told Henry was such an old boy I wouldn’t have guessed. He hasn’t gone grey, he is agile, still plays with the mouse on the stick and has a great appetite. Henry is on tablets to help his kidneys and also hyperthyroid tablets, CP fund these tablets which is a great help and takes away any worries about being able to afford them. I have support if I need it at the end of the phone and Henry has a home for the rest of his life with me. The photo is of Henry on his first day here, as you can see he settled in with no problems! Please consider giving an old cat a home, the love they give you is more rewarding than I could ever put in to words, they don’t ask for much but they deserve to spend their retirement in a loving home with a warm lap not sitting in a cattery being overlooked”. Regards Fiz
Henry(22 years young) and
Kelsey(18 years young).
Jack & Joshua ... aka Monty
Jack & Joshua are both doing great. We have kept Jacks name but have changed Joshua to Monty. They are both getting on really well with George. They all cuddle up and play together. Alex is as moody as ever and does his own thing all day!
Only bad thing is we are not having a tree this Christmas as they would bring it down and strip it in seconds! They are very much into everything at the moment!
Hello, as it's the season of goodwill to all persons, I thought I'd dictate (you know we can't read!) this message for all at CP, especially Ann and her helper. Thankyou so much for looking after me and finding me this lovely home including human Mum & Dad. A quick meeew, meeow , and tummy roll and they were completely manipulated for me!!!!!!!!! I can do, within reason, anything I like. Such a nice home, Chairs, Bed, Toys and Food, all to my liking. Outdoors is even better! I go and come when I want any time of the day or night, just a shout at the door and it opens, magic!!!! Mum & Dad don'y like my presents! Can't understand! I've attached a folder of me at home. Lots of love. Ruby.
Sandy (now known as Barney) has been with us for nearly a month and now he is settled I just wanted to send some photo’s showing how happy he is.
He is absolutely adorable and feels like he has been part of our family forever. His favourite place is on my lap or sitting in the garden sunning himself! Our resident cat Belle eleven yrs old has taken to him really well although she still ensures he knows his place and that she is the lady of the house – he is very respectful of her!!
Barney is fit and well although he still has a limp but it seems worse when he wants attention & lots of loving!! He is such a character and I can’t imagine him not being here - he is very much a lap cat and I love every minute – so does he. He has knocked several cups out of my hand with his head because I had stopped stroking him. He even sits on my lap when I am working at my desk.
Please accept a big massive thank you to everyone at Crawley Reigate & District Cats Protection for bringing us together.
And a further update...
Just a follow up email to let you know how my beautiful boy is doing!
He has been with us now for seven months and is fully healed – no evidence of former injury other than a chipped incisor!!
He is my baby and I adore him and he equally appears to adore us all.
He never goes far away from me and that’s how I like it. He is very full of energy and loves chasing his toy mice. Unfortunately he is a very good hunter and has caught a few real mice and wood pigeon although I have managed to save them all !! He is just so quick!
Barney sends his love!
Hello! Thought you might like to hear how 'Smartie' is getting on...
The story so far:
When my elderly in-laws lost their last cat suddenly overnight a few months
ago, they were quite distraught and wanted a replacement as soon as
possible, having always had the companionship of a cat during their whole
married life. There was nothing really suitable available in the Horsham CPL
district, which is where they live, so after a few weeks they were given the
chance of offering a home to a really needy cat from the Crawley district.
Fosterer 'Fizz' had taken in an extremely thin stray black and white cat,
whose chances of survival the vet had said were slim. I went to check out
'Smartie' myself and was shocked at how thin he was, although Fizz said he
had already put on a bit of weight! He had a thyroid problem and had been
put on a course of tablets, which we would have to keep on administering
throughout his whole life. I was slightly worried about this, as my in-laws
are in their mid-nineties, and I worried about Smartie missing the
occasional pill. However, fate being such as it is, Fizz and the vet decided
after a further week or two that the tablets weren't working, and that he
would have to be operated on. To cut a long story short, a further three or
four weeks went by during which Smartie had the operation to remove the
necessary part of the thyroid, and he convalesced at Fizz's home. When I
went to pick him up in November, he was already looking much better,
although still thin. I took him to my in-laws, where he immediately made
himself at home and purred away constantly. It's as though he was really
thankful to have found a loving, caring, warm and comfy home, where his
meals appeared at regular intervals (and he DOES love his food!). He has put
on a lot more weight now and is a thoroughly contented cat - although he
didn't think much of me this morning when I went round to trim his claws,
comb him and take a photograph of him for you... a bit like a reluctant
child, I suppose, but I don't hold that against him!
Just to let you know how Archie is doing....
Photos show Before and After...
When my husband and I went to the homing show in Crawley in February, it was just to look round after sadly losing Sophie, a cat we adopted just before Christmas 2007.
Archie was cringing and shaking in his dirt tray when my husband walked over to see him, but something looked right about him, so we adopted him there and then. He was described as shy and reserved, well he may have been then, but boy did he come out of his shell when we got him home! He didn't stop meowing or purring for 3 days and nights. Now he's a joy to have, so entertaining, playful, loyal, not a lap sitter but a headbutter and totally spoilt…
We came to the rehoming show back at the Hawth in November and feel in Love with Raven and Lyra.
They have been with us for nearly 2 months now and have even started to venture outside. Raven is waking us up in the morning and has fitted in to a routinue with us. Lyra has taken longer as she was very shy, but is now coming to us for strokes and has even started to test out my lap, She has started to come out of her shell and I even got a meow for the first time when she rushed in from the garden with a peg in her mouth and presented it to us.
I know in time they will both be settled and think they are happy in there new home.
I hope this helps other people to take on nervous cats because in time they will make loving friends.
Just thought you would like to know how two of your rescued kittens are doing, Charlie and Daisy (formerly Chicken and Sid). I adopted them a year a go to the day. When they first arrived they were very very timid and spent a good few weeks hiding on top of the kitchen cupboard. Slowly they realised I wasn't the big scary monster they thought and they came down for food during the day and slept under my bed at night.
I have attached two pictures, the first is them on top of the cupboard and the second when they finally decided to come down! Daisy is still very shy and won't let me touch her but Charlie likes to rub against my legs and lets me stroke him when I give them their food. They run around chasing each other at all hours of the night and seem very contented. I hope they will continue to improve so that one day they may come up onto my lap for strokes. I intend to get a third cat this year, one who is a bit less timid and will let me stoke them. I am hoping this may show the other two what they are missing out on. Of course I will be coming to you so I look forward to homing another one of your cats very soon.
I adopted zed (now fred) in december so he had a home for christmas, he was a stray. He is a old boy who had his thyroid removed, he came to me with lots of hair missing because of the thyroid and was a little poorly still. H e is doing really well now, he is a lovely effectionate cat, he sleeps on my bed with me at night and comes for a cuddle in the evening. Our dog Brandy loves him also and comes over for a kiss at times.
As promised - a couple of pics of 'Sooty' taking it easy. She does this very well, but also has a remarkable turn of speed - hence we have decided to rename her 'Turbo'. She has a great sense of humour and thinks that skidding around noisily on the laminate floor at 4am is a great laugh! She has gained much confidence very quickly, and although she likes to chill out upstairs, will now come downstairs on her own, walk past the dog, stare at the parrot and go to gaze out of the patio doors at the back garden. She is not at all shy with people either - my boyfriend's sister and fiancee came around the other evening and she went and purred all over them as well as us. A very funny and cute addition to the household!
These are two of six kittens with feline herpes virus, that were found in a skip last year. They were homed as indoor only cats, and just look how well they are doing now...
From Maisy
"I am the smallest girl in the house. I like stretching out over my Mummy's laptop while she is working. It means that I am always in view. My parents say that if I was human, I would be a super-model ... I have 5 beds .. in the lounge, bedroom 1 & 2, office and in the hallway ... spoilt? moi? .. mais non, darling ... prrrrrrrr"
From Mittens "Since my little sister and I have arrived in SW1, I have learnt how to wallpaper, fix lights and general household stuff. My parents think I was a handywoman in a previous life. I love playing with my big sister, Gemima the Dog .. we play chase ... Daddy hates it when we do that at 6 in the morning though. I am a very happy kittie"
These two beautiful boys are proof of what our branch aims to achieve.
Squidge the black and white boy in this picture came into our care as a very tiny kitten, along with his mum and four siblings. All were successfully re-homed to loving new homes.
Twiglet is a beautiful tabby boy with a lovely nature. He came into our care as a stray and went to live with Squidge and another two rescue cats. As you can see, they settled in very happily and now love playing with each other and their toys. Twiglet loves everybody and will rub round your legs then flop over for you to stroke him.
Squidge has an amusing habit of bringing all sorts of 'treasure' to his new mum, including leaves, worms, bits of bread and even the odd frog. He cuddles up every night with his mum and shows his contentment by purring very loudly!
Millie, now a very laid back lady!
Isn't this a lovely picture of Millie in her new home? This is what her new mum wrote to us when she sent this lovely picture -
'It has been just a week since we took Millie home and I wanted to give you all an update on her progress. She is the funniest, most playful and affectionate little cat I could have ever asked for. She has commandeered our bean bag which I have covered in her favourite brown fleece. She is eating really well (maybe too well!) and has had two visitors to the house which she has taken in her stride. She loves playing chase, jumping on top of my wardrobe and climbing up clothes hung behind doors. She is very mischievous and very vocal!'
Poor Austin came into our care with a badly matted coat and needed loads of TLC. He has since been homed with an experienced Persian owner and the transformation is amazing - look how beautiful is now!!!!
Pippa is one of the friendliest cats we have ever met and she came into our care last December. She was put on medication for her overactive thyroid, but she was a very good girl and gobbled them up in her food. Poor Pippa was also found to be positive for FIV. We thought that finding her a loving new home would be a mammoth task! Luckily, a wonderful couple from Southampton spotted her on our website and decided to offer her a home. She has settled in wonderfully - her toughest choice now is on which bean bag to sleep! As you can see from her picture, she is now a very happy and contented cat, and her lovely new owners feel exactly the same way.
Max recently went to a loving new home in our area. His proud dad has sent us some lovely pictures of this cheeky little boy who has certainly made himself very at home!
A picture of absolute contentment!
Here's yet another photo sent in by proud new parents - don't these two look blissful?? They too were recently re-homed in our area and are now the picture of contentment; stories like these make all our hard work so worthwhile!
Bailey & Sammy are a very special pair of cats; they were looking for an indoor only home as Sammy had had a traumatic start in life with major eye problems; he is the ginger boy in the photo. Bailey was very nervous around people but absolutely adored Sammy, who loves everybody, and would curl up with you at every opportunity, purring and snuggling as close to you as he could get.
Since going to their new home, Bailey is coming out of his shell and although not yet a lap cat exactly, he can be found rolling around on the rug in front of his new mum and dad in new found contentment. Sammy continues to be his outgoing little self, and his eyesight is improving - not that his problems ever prevented him from charging around and playing happily.
Their new mum and dad adore these two boys and they in turn are rewarded by seeing these two beautiful boys go from strength to strength!
Just look at Millie - how well she has settled in with her new mum and dad! She is getting bigger and has really settled into new life.
Since adopting Millie, her new mum's boyfriend has moved in and Millie absolutely adores him, in fact she has become a real 'daddy's girl'. She often sits on his lap in the evenings while he is watching TV and gives her mum the evil eye if she dares to touch her while she is spending time with her dad.
She has also become quite talkative and has really begun to respond when called (although only when she can be bothered). She adopts a cute pose like the one in this picture when she wants them to play with her!
