About Citrus Golden Retriever Rescue

Getting Started

A couple of years back there were several like-minded individuals that were doing Golden Retriever rescue on a one by one basis and financing the costs was becoming difficult. We got together and decided that we needed to obtain a 501(c)(3) status and Incorporate as well as a Tax Exempt status so that we could solicite assistance from the public in the form of donations and be able to designate any donations tax deductible. We could then also solicate donations of product from major companies and discounted services from participating veterinarians.

The next hurdle was Foster Homes and that was temporarily accomplished with the help of Scot & Jill Cornell, whose motto is "there's always room for one more". They also became the "Oldie Goldie" home for those dogs with fatal health issues or were too old to be good adoption candidates.

Pick up was no problem when John Keane was around. He would drop everything to go anywhere for a Golden in need.

It's devotion like this that says "it's all for the dogs"! We have many participating members with the same attitude and our thanks to each and every one of them!

Sometimes a dog needs a second chance!

Our mission Statement:

To encourage and promote responsible pet ownership, and to help reduce the abuse and neglect of all Golden Retrievers.

We are an all volunteer organization that does everything in our power to assure the humane treatment of Golden Retrievers that are unwanted, abandoned or neglected.

We have adopted over a hundred Goldens which have been young, old, injured or have special needs.  Each one does have a heart of gold and they offer so much love to the new lucky family that adopts them.

We are now a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization!

The process....

When we get a Golden, we first do a complete health check that includes blood work, spaying or nuetering, and vaccinations. Dentals are done if necessary with x-rays if indicated.

We then evaluate the dog for likes and dislikes as well as it's level of training. We confirm house training and crate train them if they aren't already.

We do anything that is needed to get the pets healthy and be ready to start looking for their "Forever Home". We do a home check, vet check and a reference check to be sure we place the right dog with the right person.

We feel after a dog enters a rescue group, the next home has to be a "Forever Home." Of course, sometimes life doesn't happen that way and we will take back any dog if the owner can no longer keep it for any reason.

We also have the new adopter complete and sign a contract that states if for any reason Citrus Golden Retriever Rescue feels the pet they adopted out is not being cared for in the way they agreed and according to what the contract stated,  we do have the right to remove the pet and get it back safely and into rescue once again.

We ask the new adopter to make a donation for their adopted dog to help the next rescue get all the care we need to give it. Some dogs require a lot of medical attention and care. This can get expensive. We rely on your generosity in this process.

We now take dogs not only from Citrus county, but we get rescues from all over Florida. We work closely with several animal shelters, County facilities, and network with other Rescue groups so we're alerted if a Golden comes in that needs our help. Of course, we still also get dogs surrendered by individuals for many reasons.

We have had abused dogs , neglected dogs, and dogs whose owners just fell upon hard times. In this economy more and more people are losing their homes and have nowhere to go much less take care of a dog so we are seeing many more dogs in need.

It is so rewarding when you have a dog placed in a perfect "Forever Home" and the dog and family are both so happy. That is what rescue is all about.

Because we are an all volunteer group we can always use help in the form of donated food or equipment and of course money as well as volunteers for foster homes and transport so we can continue to help as many dogs as need our help.

Please visit our "Able to help?" page and see if you can be of assistance in some way to help our organization save these wonderful animals.
