About Citrus Golden Retriever Rescue

Sometimes a dog needs a second chance!

Our mission Statement:

To encourage and promote responsible pet ownership, and to help reduce the abuse and neglect of all Golden Retrievers.

We are an all volunteer organization that does everything in our power to assure the humane treatment of Golden Retrievers that are
unwanted, abandoned or neglected.

We offer all needed medical attention , micro chip each dog and rehabilitate them before we place then in their new forever home.

About us

Citrus Golden Retriever Rescue started out with just one person.  Ellen Pavlik, our founder, is the practice manager at Midway Animal Hospital in Homosassa, Florida.  She started rescuing Goldens twenty years ago, first just in Citrus county either from animal control or word of mouth.

Ellen has the benefit of working at a veterinary hospital so she could quickly get all the medical care taken care of right at work.  A great big thank you to Dr. K.C. Nayfield  (the owner) who has been very generous in helping Ellen get the needed medical treatments.   We could not have ever done it without him!

Through the years more and more Goldens found their way to Midway A.H. and Ellen. We started needing more and more help so after some pleading on our part, some of the drug companies started giving donations to help in their care.

It was also very helpful that Dr. Nayfield would allow us to board some of the dogs at Midway A.H.. After a while we had more Goldens than we could board or they were just too old to ever be placed. That's where Jill and Scott Cornell came in. They were very active in Golden rescue when living down south. And since they already owned Goldens, it was perfect!! The Cornells have been the perfect match for us. They foster, do home checks, and pick up dogs.  They are there for anything that is needed for the Goldens. Their motto is "There is Always Room for One More."   Bless their hearts!  They mean it and have given lots and lots of love to each and every Golden they have helped.

We have adopted over a hundred Goldens which have been young, old, injured or have special needs.  Each one does have a heart of gold and they offer so much love to the new lucky family that adopts them.

We are now a tax exempt 501c3 organization.

The process....

When we get a Golden, we first do a complete health check that includes blood work, spaying or neutering, and dental work including x rays if indicated. We do anything that is needed to get the pets healthy and be ready to start looking for their "Forever Home". We do a home check and a reference check to be sure we place the right dog with the right person.

We feel after a dog enters a rescue group, the next home has to be a "Forever Home." Of course, sometimes life doesn't happen that way and we will take back any dog if the owner can no longer keep it for any reason.

We also have the new adopter complete and sign a contract that states if for any reason Citrus Golden Retriever Rescue feels the pet they adopted is not being cared for in the way they agreed and according to what the contract stated,  we do have the right to remove the pet and get it back safely and into rescue once again.

We ask the new adopter to donate a fee to help the next rescue get all the care we need to give it. We now take dogs not only from Citrus county, but we get rescues from all over Florida. We work closely with several animal shelters and are alerted if a Golden comes in. Of course, we still also get dogs surrendered for many reasons.

We have had abused dogs , neglected dogs, and dogs whose owners just fell upon hard times.  In this economy, more and more people are losing their homes and have nowhere to go much less take care of a dog so we are seeing many more dogs in need.

Anyone who can help with home checks, transportation, donations, or fostering, please  give us a call at 352-860-0556, 352-228-7573, or 352-795-7110.  We can always use help!

It is so rewarding  when you have a dog placed in a perfect "Forever Home" and the dog and family are both so happy. That is what rescue is all about.
