Joseph Childs was born on December 13, 1832 (subject of debate - his tombstone read 1831) in Wantage Circuit, Birkshire, England and died on April 18, 1902 in Dawn Township. At the age of 20, Joseph married Phoebe Harris who was unfortunately taken by death within a year of their marriage. He married Mary Elworthy Sparks on November 6, 1855 in Barton, Ontario. Mary was born on June 6, 1833 in Warwickshire, England and died on December 24, 1915 in Dawn Township. Joseph's obituary read as follows: Joseph Childs, one of Dawn's most widely known and respected citizens, passed away on Friday, April 18th, 1902 at 7:15, age 70 years, 4 months and 5 days. An impressive and edifying service was held at his late home on Sunday at 1:00 pm by Rev. R.C. Burton, after which all that was mortal was laid to rest in the Butler cemetery. Seventy-two rigs followed the remains to the cemetery. Mr. Childs was a man of many good qualities, upright, honorable and a kind neighbour. Those who are left to mourn will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement.
Joseph served the Methodist church as class leader, church trustee, and Sunday school superintendent for many years. During his stewardship, not once did he report a deficiency for ministerial support although it is well known that at the time of a quarterly meeting, he would make up any shortcomings with his own money.

Morris Childs and Helen Jennings
Morris Jackson Childs was born October 3, 1916 and was killed in a horrific train accident on September 8, 1956. Morris and his crew were at a railway crossing waiting for a train to pass. They were carrying a trailer load of hot pitch behing them and as the train completed its pass, they pulled out, only to be struck by a train coming the other way. Five died in all, including the engineer of the train. Morris married Helen Louise Jennings on August 7, 1937. Helen was born on June 13, 1915. The couple had two children together: Ilene Grace, Lyle Ernest. Helen remarried on December 10, 1977. She married Vaughn George Hess. Vaughn was born on March 11, 1913 and died April 18, 2002.
Ilene Grace was born on March 27, 1938 and died from breast cancer on July 29, 1990. She married Richard Poor on June 19, 1965. Richard was born on August 22, 1938. The couple had two children, Gayle who was born April 21, 1968 and Catherine Elaine who was born May 1, 1970. Catherine married Jeffery William Bohnert on June 3, 2000. Jeffery was born on March 18, 1964. The couple have one child, Nicholas William Robert Bohnert, born March 18, 2003.
Lyle Ernest Childs was born December 11, 1940 and wed Kay Kennedy on December 5, 1964. Kay was born on February 16, 1938. They have two children, Keith Robert Childs who was born on April 11, 1967 and Brenda who was born on September 25, 1970. At age 16, Keith was hurt in a bizarre motocross accident that left him a quadrepelegic. Brenda married Robert Purdy of Sarnia but the couple has since separated.
Ruth Ann Childs was born November 3, 1949 and died from a heart defect on April 14, 1950.
Catherine Louise Childs was born January 18, 1951. Unfortunately her time with us was brief. She died thirteen hours after her birth.

In 60 years of marriage, the couple never fought once, an amazing feat, especially by today's standards. Ernest and Mildred had five children: Barbara Jean, Sharron Eileen, Dean Ernest Francis Henry, and Calvin Leroy.
Barbara Jean Childs was born November 25, 1946. She married John Wayne Chapple on July 10, 1971. Wayne was born August 16, 1943. They had two children: Tanya Annette and John William. Tanya was born February 11, 1975. She died of malignant melanoma on July 14, 2000. John was born on November 15, 1979.
Sharron Eileen Childs was born January 18, 1949. She married Gordon Patrick Elgie on September 8, 1973. Gord was born November 1, 1946. They had three children:

Grant Patrick (b November 14, 1976) was married to Lisa Nicole Holland (b October 11, 1981) on October 18, 2003. The couple has since separated.
Amy Lynn (b July 18, 1978) was married to James Donald Adams (b August 16, 1977) on June 9, 2001. They haave a son, Nevin James Adams born September 28, 2004.
Dean Ernest Childs was born on November 22, 1950. He married Heather Anne Harris on October 26, 1974. Heather was born on March 5, 1951. The couple adopted two children: Robin Anne Childs (b June 3, 1981) and Kent Kenny Dean Childs (b March 19, 1992).
Francis Henry Childs was born May 5, 1955. He married Wendy Jo Frances Stanley on October 22, 1976. Wendy was born January 25, 1957. The couple have three children.
