We have recently started using easysearch.co.uk to help raise much needed funds for our band. If you would like to help support the band and raise money please click here.
Well, we have now reached the end of our Christmas engagements for 2011. Highlights included playing at the Lakelands Hospice "Light up a life" service and as usual we had a lot of fun at the two Christmas dinners held at the Corby Silver Band club, for club members. We also played at a new venue this year, playing at Mocha Mamas in Kettering, and as usual we entertained shoppers at ASDA in Corby, and Morrisons in both Corby and Kettering.
At our Christmas social night, it was lovely to see some of the invited guest players who have helped out during the year and the families of our regular members came along to join in with the celebrations.
We now look forward to 2012 and will soon be starting preparations for the area contest. We still have a few vacancies in the band, particularly in the cornet, bass and percussion sections, so if you would like to be part of a friendly, hard working band, then please do get in touch.
December 2011
As part of the Christmas social evening there were certificates to be awarded to personnel in the two bands:
Hannah Rhodes, received a certificate for being the most improved player in the training band.
The certificate for the most improved player in the senior band was awarded jointly to Paul and Bev Newton.
The bandsperson of the year went to Lloyd Preston for his 100% attendance and committment to the band, and for filling in as deputy MD when needed. So well done and thank you Lloyd. A very deserving winner.
December 2011
Once again, it is the time of year when we have had to wave goodbye to members of the band who have taken up places at university. This has meant that we now have some extra vacancies to fill - particularly in the trombone and percussion sections.
Due to family and work commitments we also have new vacancies in the horn, bass and cornet sections, and would to start next year with a full band, so please come along and help us fill these vacancies.
October 2011
Summer season engagements
Our summer season of engagements is now coming to a close.
Highlights included the two performances where the band played at Corby's new theatre -The Core, where we were asked to play as part of an amateur production about the history of Corby.
Once again we entertained an enthusiastic audience at Lyveden New Beild. This is always one of the band's favourite engagements.
We also performed in our usual variety of open air concerts, some in glorious sunshine and some not so glorious. Luckily only one event had to be abruptly ended due to the weather.
It was lovely to see some of the members of our training band, who have recently moved into the senior band, playing in their first few concerts with the senior band, proudly contributing to our happy team.
We now have one final performance in Northampton on Saturday 3rd September before we look ahead to the autumn contesting season and further ahead to Christmas. Almost time to get those jingle bells rattling.
August 2011
Our newest recruit is Mark Asprey, who has joined the euphonium section. This is great news as it means when all three euphoium players are at an engagement, then Pete Beale will "go large" and join Jeremy Wood on Eb bass.
Mark has previously played with other local bands and has now settled with Corby Silver. We wish him a long and happy association with the band.
July 2011
The band held their AGM on Wednesday 15th June, where a new committee was elected. Tony Wheeler was re-elected as chairman. There are new members of the committee who replace some of the current personnel, who will be attending university in the autumn, and committee members who have been newly elected.
To see a list of our committee members please go to the Meet the band page.
Our back row cornet section has recently been boosted by four new members who have made the transition from training band to senior band.
William Rhodes, Josh Milne and Teresa Rhodes (cornet) and Michael Milne (flugel) have all joined the senior band on back row cornet.
We also welcome Paul Newton to the baritone section.
Arrivals We have been pleased to welcome some more new players to our band.
We welcome Jo and Craig Magner to the band. Both Jo (horn) and Craig (percussion) also play with Gretton Silver band.
Carl Lyons as picked up his cornet again, after numerous years of not playing. He is currently playing 3rd cornet.
We welcomed Michelle Beeby back after the arrival of her gorgeous son Matthew. Michelle has continued, as before with the repiano cornet position.
In the new year we welcomed Melanie Bones, who plays bass trombone. With Melanie playing the bass trombone part, it has meant that Kerry Spence can now permanently play solo trombone, following our previous solo trombone player - Sophie Roberts' departure to university in the autumn.
Also this year we have welcomed Julius Ciapas on BBb bass. This is great news for the band as due to retirement and ill health our bass section had been somewhat depleted.
Departures Unfortunately we said goodbye to Jodie Hamlett, who has also left to concentrate on her studies, after her second spell with the band. Jodie originally joined the band on 3rd cornet, but had recently changed to baritone.
We ended the year with a social event and started the new year with one too.
As usual many members of the band and their families, welcomed in the new year with a gathering at the band club on New Years Day. It was nice to see and catch up with a few of our past members who were there too.
Members of the band along with guest players and conductors who have helped out during the year, attended a band social evening with fun, food and fabulous festivities. It was our way to say a huge 'Thank You' to the players, supporters, families and guest players who have supported Corby Silver during the year.
Well the festive season has come and gone and the tinsel and reindeer headbands have been packed away for another year.
The band played in a variety of concerts including the "Light up a life" service at Lakelands Hospice and three concerts in our very own band club, as well as a couple of carrolling session is the local supermarkets.
The Help for Heroes concert on Saturday 6th November was a huge success. Many thanks to everyone involved.
It was great fun playing in a joint concert with MD Nigel Hall's other band - Bletchington Silver.
With ticket sales, the raffle and the generosity of the audience, we were able to send a cheque for £800 to the Help for Heroes charity.
We are very grateful to our friends in other bands - particularly Gretton Silver and Rushden Town, for their support towards this concert.
A huge "Thank You" to the organising team for making this concert possible, and helping to raise so much money for such a worthwhile cause.
Corby Silver Band will be performing in a joint concert with MD Nigel Hall's other band Bletchington Silver, on Saturday 6th November, starting at 7pm. The concert is being held at Brooke Weston Academy, Coombe Road, Great Oakley, Corby NN18 8LA.
The programme includes a selection of military marches, film themes and solo features from both bands as well as many joint pieces.
This will certainly be a concert not to be missed.
For tickets contact Cathy on 01536 460781 - suggested donation £5. All money raised goes towards the Help for Heroes charity.
We are absolutely thrilled to welcome our new soprano player, Alison.
The soprano position has been vacant for the last six months, so it is great that we have managed to fill this position in time for the festive season and looking further ahead to the concerts and contests in 2011.
Alison was previously a member of the band a few years ago and played back row cornet, so it is great to welcome her back.
November 2010
Another player joins the senior band
We would like to welcome Ethan Glover to the back row cornet section of the band. This has helped strengthen the back row whilst Michelle Beeby has some well deserved time with Matthew, her beautiful new addition to her family.
And with news of potential new players joining the cornet, horn and trombone sections, Corby Silver Band is on definitely on the up and looking forward to working hard and aiming high in 2011.
October 2010
We would like to welcome more new members to Corby Silver Band. Willie Allen joins us on back row cornet and Geoff Holah joins the baritone section.
If you are interested in joining the band then please do get in touch with us. Our current vacancies are shown on our vacancy page. However, ALL new players will be made most welcome.
September 2010
Congratulations to our repiano cornet player Michelle Beeby and her partner Jon on the birth of their baby boy. Matthew John Loake arrived safely into the world at 4:33 this afternoon - Saturday 18th September.
Congratulations also to proud grandad Geoff Beeby, who is one of our solo cornet players.
September 2010
We have recently been joined by a few new players which has helped to strengthen the cornet and trombone sections. For our current vacancies go to the Vacancies page.
September 2010
The training band, which was set up just one year ago, is celebrating its success as some of the players have now reached a standard where they are able to join in once a week with part of the senior band rehearsals. We hope that these new players will enjoy being part of the senior band and that the opportunity of playing with more experienced musicians will help to develop their confidence and ability.
September 2010
Congratulations to principal euphonium player Tony Wheeler and his lovely wife Brenda, who renewed their wedding vows yesterday - Saturday 14th August.
August 2010
Tony and Brenda, after renewing their wedding vows.
The band were delighted to be asked to play during the ceremony, which included Tony playing his solo, suitably titled "The Wedding", as Brenda walked down the aisle. The band also performed a short concert to entertain the guests during the reception.
It is with great sadness that we report the death of one of our former players - Robert Baxter, aged just 52.
Robert, or Stan to his friends, was a well respected and very talented musician, who even after he moved to Scotland, would often re-appear at the band club, trombone in hand asking if he could gig with us.
During his time at Corby Silver Band, Robert held the position of Chairman of the band committee and also was one of our first junior band trainers.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this sad time.
August 2010
Robert "Stan" Baxter, who will be deeply missed by many.
We are now halfway through our summer season of concerts. So far we have been extremely lucky with the British weather.
We look forward to our remaining summer concerts and further ahead to the autumn concert and contest season.
To see where we are performing next or for details of our future concerts go to our
engagements
page.
July 2010
We are pleased to welcome two more players to Corby Silver Band.
Tony Wheeler joins us on euphonium, allowing Pete Beale to transfer on to Eb bass, meaning we now have a full bass section again. Tony has had a short (20 year) break from playing, but we are confident he'll be back on form in no time.
We also welcome Sarah Norman to the back row cornet section. Sarah is a past member of Beanfield School brass band, and joins Mark, Sandra and Amanda, who are also previous members of Beanfield band.
We just need to fill the remaining vacancies on the cornet section and we will have a full band once more.
May 2010
On Sunday 14th March, we travelled to Bedworth to take part in the 4th section of the Midlands Area Contest. 25 bands registered for this compettion and 24 bands took part on the day. We were pleased with our 11th place result, as this is our highest placing for a few years and our MD for the perormance had only joined the band three months earlier. See more information about the contest.
Our new beginner band is thriving. There is a mixture of young and not so young faces, learning a variety of instruments. We have 3 new cornet players, one on trombone, one on horn, one on baritone and one on euphonium. This success of course means, that we will need to approach the club, to buy some more instruments for potential new members.
If you or someone you know would like to be part of this new group then please email us
corbysilverband@btinternet.com
or phone Tim Langtree - 01536 460781 for more information.
February 2010
On a cold weekend in January three of our regular players, Sandra Preston, Michelle Beeby and Amanda Beale, along with guest cornet player Clare Coleman, travelled to a very wet Skegness to take part in rehearsals and a concert with the all girl band "Boobs and Brass" (based here in Northamptonshire), of which all four girls are regular members.
The whole weekend was entitled the 'boob blow' and was aimed at raising as much money as possible for the chosen band charity - the Breast Cancer Campaign.
Over 370 volunteers, who attended the event gave up their time to take part in the ‘Boob Blow’, paying money to play in a massed band, which apparently could be heard by the championship section bands who were participating in the contest on centre stage.
Altogether since its formation in 2006, the band has raised over £56,000 for Breast Cancer Research and other charitable organisations.
The bands founder members Maggie Betts and Jane Nichols, presented a cheque for £15,530 as the latest instalment to the ongoing work of the Breast Cancer Campaign.
Last year, the girls were presented with an ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ by Breast Cancer Research at the House of Lords for their efforts in raising money for this worthwhile cause.
If you would like to find out more about the work of Boobs and Brass - then go to www.boobsandbrass.com
January 2010
Due to the success of the training band, we are now in the position to offer tuition in a beginner band, for enthusaistic, hard working players with very little or no previous musical ability in playing a brass instrument.
The rehearsals are free and you don't need your own instrument as we have a selection of instruments for loan.
If you or someone you know would like to be part of this new group then please email us
corbysilverband@btinternet.com
or phone Tim Langtree - 01536 460781 for more information.
January 2010
We would like to welcome Dan Lane and Matthew Rhodes to the senior band. Both players play bass trombone. Dan was introduced to the band by girlfriend Sophie, who is our solo trombonist. Dan is ably supporting Matthew who is still in the early stages of his playing. Matthew's mum and younger brother are currently members of the training band.
We are still keen to recruit a bass player (Eb or Bb), so we can benefit from a full bass section once again. If you are interested in this or any other currently vacant positions and would like to be part of the band then please contact us using the details on our contact page.
December 2009
This year the band took part in caroling sessions at ASDA in Corby, and the Morrisons stores in both Corby and Kettering and also played a selection of festive tunes and carols at St. Barnabus Church in Wellingborough.
Due to the generosity of shoppers at ASDA we were able to present a cheque for £200, to Cathy Langtree to go towards the running costs of our chosen charity - The Lakelands Hospice, situated here in Corby.
These events are great fund raisers for the band, and the money raised goes towards the running costs of the training band - which is currently financing new instruments and music for the new beginners band.
December 2009
Training and Beginner Bands
Membership of the training band continues to grow and includes both brass and percussion players. The training band includes both adults and junior members.
Now that these players have progressed beyond the basics, we are now looking to start another complete beginners group, and have already been contacted by people wishing to join.
We are gaining more and more interest in the training band as word is getting round about its existence.
October 2009
Masque Theatre concert a great success
On Saturday 3rd October, Corby Silver Band performed in a joint concert with the Vocality Singers in a concert at the Masque Thatre in Barton Seagrave. It was a most enjoyable night in which the band performed a selection of music from "Around the world", including 'Lord of the Dance' (Ireland), 'Glasnost' (Russia), 'Journey through America' (USA) and the cornet solo 'The Shepherd's Song' (France), performed by principal cornet, David Ashby.
The evening finished with a selection of ABBA songs performed by the band and Vocality.
We would like extend our thanks to our guest MD for the evening, Pete Vine - MD for Rushden Town Band, who had rehearsed the band in the lead up to the peformance, and still continues to take rehearsals whilst we audition and appoint a new Musical Director.
Even though our principal percussionist, Aidan Langtree postponed his 18th birthday celebrations so he could be part of the concert, the band tried to make his special day extra special by playing Happy Birthday to him, for which the audience joined in, and he was presented with a birthday cake, which tasted delicious.
We would like to thank the deputy players who helped us during this performance. We are extremely grateful for all their help.
October 2009
In September we set introduced our new training band. Six very keen members turned up for the first rehearsal. Some were complete beginners whilst others had a small amount of previous experience playing music.
All these enthusiastic new members said they had enjoyed their time at the first rehearsal, playing as part of the new band, and it was fantastic to see them all come back again the following week for the next rehearsal.
September 2009
We would like to welcome Kerry Spence to the band on bass trombone. Kerry also plays with Gretton Silver, another local band, and is enjoying the challenge of playing a different selection of music.
August 2009
We are now halfway through our summer season of concerts. So far we have performed concerts and entertained appreciative audiences at local venues including Lakelands Hospice, Harringworth, Brigstock, Lyveden New Beild, Geddington and Lyddington, and still have more to do before the end of summer.
We would like to thank the guest players - particularly Clare and Geoff, who have help us out during some of these concerts.
August 2009
Changes within the band & current vacancies
After 30 years of playing, our resident flugel player Charlie Moore has decided to concentrate on his other hobby - flying. One of our horn players is currently playing flugel on a temporary basis. This means we are in need of a permanent flugel player. So if you would like to join a lively and enthusiastic band, then please contact us.
We also have a vacancy for Eb bass, while one of our most long serving members takes some time out.
We would love to welcome any new players to the band, particularly cornet players. Due to work committments our soprano player is unable to make rehearsals each week and so has volunteered to step down. If you are a soprano player, or a brass player that fancies a change form your current position then contact us to find out more.
May 2009
Summer Concert Season 2009
Well the Summer concert season is well and truly underway. We have perfomed at Lyddington Village Fete, where we performed to an appreciative audience and have already been asked to play for them next year.
We also performed in Corby town centre. This was to provide some entertainment during the cultural week festivities. Again the band put on a good performance and the comments from the audience were very pleasing. A massive thank you to the guest players who helped fill the empty seats. It's not easy getting a full band for a Saturday lunchtime, especially at such short notice.
May 2009
Band Annual General Meeting
There was a good turnout on 13th May for the band AGM, where the band members shared their views and a new committee was elected for the forthcoming year. Many members of the committee were happy to continue in their current positions - the only changes being Pete Beale has now taken on the role of engagement secretary and Sue Roberts joins the committee in her position as Welfare Officer.
May 2009
Happy 50th Birthday to our band chairman, Paul Newton.
Paul turned 50 this week on the 26th of February, and as principal cornet, Dave Ashby put it.... he doesn't look a day over 55 !!!!
Congratulations, and best wishes, from all the guys and gals in the band.
February 2009
The 'All Girls' join the 'All Boys'
On 25th October, two of our members - Michelle Beeby (cornet) and Amanda Beale (baritone), who are members of the all girl band 'Boobs and Brass', travelled to Huddersfield to share the stage with one of the country's most famous championship section bands - Brighouse and Rastrick.
Boobs and Brass were the special guests of the all male band and played to a full house at the Hudderfield Town Hall.
The evening started with the two bands sharing the stage for the opening march, overture and a few other pieces (all coincidently featuring girls names in the title), before the boys vacated the stage to allow the girls to shine in the limelight.
Boobs and Brass sharing the stage with Brighouse and Rastrick Band
The second half opened with Brighouse and Rastrick band showing their musical talents, which included a fantastic and very entertaining performance of 'Mr Sandman', before welcoming the girls back on to the stage to play the finishing pieces - including .... yes, 'The Floral Dance'. Wow what a moment that was!!!
It has to be said it took quite a while for the girls to come back down to earth, and the girls are looking forward to the return concert when they will be inviting the boys over to Northamptonshire for a concert at the Lighthouse Theatre in Kettering in November 2009.
