The School Year Begins

Welcome to school year 2011 -  2012.  This course will introduceyou to the world of business.  You will learn the skills of building a web development business through real world experiences.  You will break down into groups and develop start up companies. Each group will name their company, brand their company, develop a business plan, and learn all the technology skills needed to design and build websites.  The classroom will become a business with each of you being hired as entry-level web developers. The first couple of months you will be in an intensive training program to learn how to do the job. Business and management skills are introduced right in the beginning of the class along with the technology concepts and this thread is continued all through the course.

ADVANCED WEB DESIGN ACTIVITY 2

 

 

OBJECTIVE:

To gather information needed to create a business plan for the Web Design Company

 

INTRODUCTION

You are all about to become web designers! You have chosen your line of business and it is time to develop your business plan. Each company must write a business plan.  No company will succeed without a solid business plan in place.  Background research and planning has to be done before this plan can be written.  Individuals in the company will do research but then the whole team will come together to discuss and start to put ideas down that will result in a well written business plan.

 

TASKS :

 

Task One:

 

Your group is about to begin an adventure that will determine your destiny from scratch. Your group must begin by describing your business in a business plan. Remember this is just a draft.  It is a time to gather information and reach consensus on some of the issues. Put bullet points of ideas under each question.  To begin, discuss and answer the following questions: 

  1. What will you provide for the customer?
  2. Who is my target customer?
  3. How will I communicate with my customer?
  4. What product and/or service will I provide?
  5. Where will the business be located? What hours will it operate?
  6. Who is the competition?

Task Two:

 

A very important part of any business is the customer.  You will need to advertize to get your customers.  You will need to strategize as to how you are going market your business. You are going to need to figure out what marketing materials you are going to need to create in order to attract customers to your business.  Research answers to the following questions:

 

  1. How do you market a web design business?
  2. What kind of materials do you need to develop for your marketing campaign?
  3. What kind of an advertizing campaign are you going to set up? (Ads, trade shows, etc.)
  4. What is it going to cost you to market your business?  (Share this information with the finance people.)

ADVANCED WEB ACTIVITY 1

 

 

OBJECTIVE:

To evaluate 10 web design company websites

 

INTRODUCTION

This is a team activity and must be done as a team.  Project Managers will direct the team through this assignment.  Your job is to go through each one of the 10 web design company’s websites as a team and evaluate them using the grid on the worksheet provided. The team will have to come to consensus on which of the websites is the best and which is the weakest.  After reviewing each of the websites, the team will list services that their company will offer once they set up their own web design business.

 

TASKS:

  1. each team member must go to their email and download the assignment
  2. each team must pick two computers near each other
  3. each team will open and go through each website and evaluate them based on the grid worksheet provided in the email
  4. once the grid is filled out each team will answer the questions provided on page 2 of the worksheet
  5. after this worksheet is completed the project manager will email the completed document to Ms. Campia at gcampia@boston.k12.ma.us
