Suopellon Pepita's Pitsi

Welcome to our site dedicated to our Karelian Bear Dogs, Suopellon Pepita's Pitsi, her sister Suopellon Pepita's Piki, who we call Anu and their puppies. We are located in a town called Restoule in Northern Ontario, Canada. Purebred Karelian Bear Dogs are a rare sight in North America.
Pitsi and Anu's sire is Canadian Champion Elgbjorns Kaksi Lajki and their mother is Suopellon Pepita originally from Finland, now living in Toronto, Canada. Their ancestors can be traced back to original recordings of Karelian Bear Dogs in the Finnish Kennel Club. They boast of many show champions and hunting champions in their lineage. Pitsi is registered with the Canadian Kennel Club, the United Kennel Club and she is recorded with the American Kennel Club Foundation Stock Service Program. Anu is registered with the Canadian Kennel Club.

Suopellon Pepita's Piki (Anu)

Pitsi, Anu and Karelian Bear Dogs, in general, are very friendly with people. They are energetic, skillful, intelligent and independant. Although they are not a dog for the novice dog owner, they are very loyal to their human family and make a great companion. They are a very powerful dog who are willing to take on any game animal. They originate from Finland and are used to hunt elk, moose, bear and other wild game.

Anu's visit to Sisu and Talvi

Anu, on the right, and I just went for a visit to see Sisu, on the left and Grawpaw's Talvisota. If things go as planned we are hoping to have a litter the beginning of October, 2008.

Our Puppies

Grawpaw's Talvisota

On May 31, 2008 Anu's puppy Grawpaw's Talvisota entered, because of her young age, her first sanction match and placed 2nd. We are so proud of Talvi and Muffy...great job!

Surprise Visitor

We had a wonderful surprise visitor come by our house on May 17/08. Sala, a beautiful 10 year old purebred Karelian Bear Dog. Her mother came from the same kennel in Finland as Pitsi and Anu's mother, Pepita.
It was wonderful to meet this gentle Karelian and to hear about her stories. She lives with many other dogs, chickens and rabbits. It was nice to hear how Sala is gentle enough to let a chicken steal food from her mouth yet she is fierce and brave enough to protect her human and non-human family from bears and other predators which try to come on to her property. Who knew we had another purebred Karelian in Northern Ontario? Thank you for coming to see us and we will be sure to invite you to our next KBD get together.....

The girls...

Anu and Pitsi have become like two peas in a pod. When we go for a hike in the bush, they are almost like siamese twins, connected at the hip. They are side by side following the scents of deer, bear, moose and other animals that have crossed their paths.
Pitsi just recently proved her tracking ability by leading us, in the dark, directly to a wounded deer.
Just as I had written the above sentence today, Oct. 20, 2007 someone came to get Pitsi to find another wounded deer and she found it within 3 minutes. She definitely has the Karelian Bear Dog hunting instinct.

Can't help but share this picture taken Oct. 6/07 of GrawPaw's Ville Jaska....I love it!

Our New Adventure - Kicksledding Karelians

When I was a child in Finland we had Kick Sleds and to this day they are still very popular there, from young tots to seniors using them for shopping. They are also used as a great way to keep your Karelian Bear Dog in shape in the winter. We just got ours so we shall see how the training goes....but we are sure looking forward to it....in the picture it is Pitsi's first time in the harness....
