Anu & Ilo's Litter born April 27, 2009

Eight Healthy Puppies

We were so excited April 27, 2009.  Anu gave birth to 8 healthy puppies.  Six beautiful girls and two handsome boys to the proud parents, Suopellon Piki (Anu) and Bjornehuset's Lasse (Ilo).
One of my mother's sister's husbands unfortunately just passed away the Tuesday before Anu's puppies were born on April 27, 2009.  He was a wonderful, funny, interesting man.  He was born and lived his whole life on his family farm in Liesjärvi near Keuruu, Finland.  When I took my Canadian husband to Finland, it was the first time my uncle had ever met someone who could not speak Finnish and he decided to call him Reagan...lol   He told the best stories.  He talked of the Russia-Finland winter war and how some of the Russian prisoners of war were kept in the neighbour's barn.  He told of how they did not have to be jailed because where would they run....it was fridgid temperatures, in a remote area.
Since the Karelian Bear Dog was almost wiped out during the winter war I had planned on naming one of the puppies Väinö all along....but it just gives it all that much more meaning now with his passing.
My mother was from a large family of mostly girls, so this litter has inspired me to name the pups after my uncle, my aunts and two of their husbands.....it will be funny to see if the husbands and wives hang out together.
So the boys names are Väinö and Veikko Lasse.  The girls are Rauha (which also means peace), Kerttu, Kaija, Eeva, Liisa and Maire.  Liisa is Väinö's wife and Kaija is Veikko's wife.

As always a couple of the puppies names were changed when they got to their new homes.  Väinö, the inspiration for the whole litter....now goes by the name Dakoda Lasse or Koda for short, and Liisa is now Suvi.
All 8 of the puppies and myself, taken a couple of nights before the first of the puppies starting leaving....

Grawpaw's Rauha

Rauha the first born has now joined her new family in the Yukon.  She flew with her brother Grawpaw's Dakoda Lasse and sister Grawpaw's Kerttu first to Edmonton and then on to Whitehorse from there.  She had an exciting first week at her new home at the end of which she got to go on a float plane to a remote fishing camp with her new family.

Grawpaw's Veikko

Veikko the second born was picked up by his new family and has now gone to live in Manitouwadge, Ontario. There, he will eventually be going to work in the bush daily with his forestry working new owner. Veikko's new family just love him and Veikko is thrilled to be able to visit and play with our Grawpaw's Kulta Lotta who lives in the same town.

Grawpaw's Kerttu

Kerttu the third born has joined her new owner in Alberta.  Just like brother Veikko, Kerttu has also gone to a forestry worker and will be accompanying her to work when she is old enough.  During days off she will be at a farm with 3 border collies to burn her energy with.

Grawpaw's Kaija

Kaija, the fourth born, is now living in Webwood, Ontario at Black Bear Camp.  There she will be keeping the bears away from the tourists in the summer and used for hunting in the fall.  She is loved by her new family, both human and canine.  Kaija is an unusual Karelian, as she apparently loves the water and starts her days off with a swim in the lake.....
Kaija's owners have got their hands on a bear claw which they have been using to train Kaija for tracking.  They are amazed at her progress already.

Grawpaw's Dakoda Lasse

Dakoda Lasse was the fifth born and has gone to live in northern Alberta.  There he has joined a wonderful young family with 2 other dogs and 3 young kids to keep him busy.  Koda will be keeping the kids safe from bears, hunting with dad and eventually doing agility with mom.  He also has been doing wonderful with tracking.

Koda also loves the water and they have a hard time keeping him out of the tub...lol..July 29, 2009

Grawpaw's Eeva

Eeva, the sixth born, we grew especially attached to, as she stayed with us until she was 15 weeks old.  We had to wait until that age because she was going closer to her roots, to Denmark and because of European Union regulations, we had to wait for 3 weeks after her rabies vaccination.  She has gone to Bjornehuset's Kennel

Eeva is now in the birth place of her father, Bjornehuset's Lasse.  There she will hopefully someday carry on the wonderful genes of both of her parents.
I have been hearing daily stories of her adventures there.  She even has found a surrogate mother there, Nuggi, who was nice enough to let the puppy from the far away foreign land feed from her.....

Eeva and I, August 7, 2009

Not the greatest picture but I had to post it because it was one of the last pictures taken of Eeva and Pitsi....you would swear Pitsi was Eeva's mother. Markings wise they are very similar and Pitsi just loved Eeva. Everyone is used to me crying when puppies leave our house but with Eeva, even Pitsi cried the first night she was gone.

Grawpaw's Suvi

Suvi, the seventh born, has gone to Colorado to live with her big brother Grawpaw's Jalo.  We could not be happier that Suvi (even though I will forever know her as Liisa, lol) has such a wonderful home.  Doug and Laura have done a great job with training Jalo, I can't wait to see what they can accomplish with Suvi

Grawpaw's Maire

Last but not least, Maire was the eigth born.  Maire lived up to my aunt's beauty and was many people's favourite puppy during their time with us.  She has gone to a wonderful, young Finnish couple in northern Ontario.  Maire has quickly won their hearts over.....
Lisa and Maire, they both look very happy with each other...June 21, 2009
