The Region

Originally known as "Rough Ridge", Oturehua is now a quiet little township serving the farming community of the Ida Valley.
Situated right on the Otago Central rail Trail, Oturehua is a convenient base for exploring the region and its activities.
At Oturehua, you can visit the authentic 1930's style Gilchrist's Store, built in 1899, and still trading today.
You could do a tour of the famous Hayes Engineering Works, est. in 1895 and home to the fence strainer used to this day on NZ farms.
To the North of Oturehua a worthwhile detour up Reef Road, leads to the Golden Progress Mine, an historic gold mining site with the poppet head still standing.
Oturehua is renowned for its hot summers and cold winters, and the Idaburn Dam, just south of the township is host to the bonspiel, an ancient tournament for all curling clubs which can only be held on natural ice.  This is a wonderful sight!  The dam is also the site for the famous Brass Monkey Rally held each year at Queens Birthday Weekend.

Wedderburn

The top of Rough Ridge between Oturehua & Wedderburn marks the highest point on the Rail Trail! (618m above sea level), with the trail rising more noticeably here.  Near this spot, the Rail Trail crosses the line of 45 degrees south latitude, twice.  Look out for the markers.
From the top the trail begins an easy decent and brings you to the Red Barn, at The Lodge & Cottages in Wedderburn.  Here you can relax, grab a coffee or cold drink, and watch a DVD on the local history.
The Wedderburn Tavern offers lunch and dinner options.
The Wedderburn Goods Shed which was relocated to its original site in 2002, and made famous in the painting by Grahame Sydney is a favourite photo spot!

Naseby

Explore Naseby with its historic buildings, some dating back to 1863 when gold was first discovered.  Choose from the many walks to suit all ages and abilities, or grab a mountain bike and choose from the easy tracks along the water races to the more challenging and technical tracks up steep hills.  Coalpit and Hoffmans dams are great places to picnic and swim.
Naseby has also become the country's curling capital, with NZ's first indoor olympic curling rink.  Come along and enjoy the ancient sport of curling, indoors!  Fully licensed lounge bar and viewing area.  Bookings are advisable.  Open 7 days a week from 10am-5pm.
Naseby now has the luge track, which is open in the winter months, and a great group activity.
Naseby is approximately a 20 minute drive from Oturehua.
