Exley Head Cross
I do believe the stone at the top of Exley Head was called
something like the 'Vinegar Cross' as coins were left in the indentation
which was filled with vinegar to purify them and then goods were left in
return. This was of course during the outbreak of plague in the 1600's. I do
believe they also had bear baiting up there. Thankyou David Kirkley for the fantastic story,it brings things more to life
looking at it from a small distance

Squared at the base, with a large hollow at the centre into which the upright stone cross was originally erected. In the past, a number of archaeologists and historians have speculated that the Exley Head Cross dates from as early as the 9th to the 15th century. We may never find out for certain. It’s position at the roadside gives it the category of being a ‘Wayside Cross.’
