New Club 1998

A new club was formed in Maniototo in 1998 with the amalgamation of the Gimmerburn Patearoa and Ranfurly Clubs.

Maniototo had 2 preseason games, winning against Eastern 17 - 16,  also a win against Mossburn .

First for the New Club

Maniototo 5 v Maheno 12 played at Gimmerburn. Maniototo's try came from Elliot Heckler.

Maniototo 22 v Athletic  15.
Maniototo's impressive fullback Hamish Wilson kicked a penalty at the start of the game.
Maniototo grabbed the lead midway through the spell when number 8 Paul Dougherty  scored from a superb scrum on the Athletic line. Athletic came back with a converted try giving the homeside a lead at half time 17 - 8.  The gallant Maniototo pack stuck to its task and midway through the spell Dougherty scored his second try.


A first for the Maniototo Boys having a trip to Lawrence to play under lights. Maniototo winning the game 18 points to 10.
Maniototo were more experienced in the forwards and after leading 7 - 3 at the break held off a determined homeside on a wet ground that produced a greasy ball. The vital period came at the start of the third quarter when Maniototo saw Mark Inder kick a penalty goal and flanker Gavin Crossan score a try  pushed the score out to 15 - 3.  Early in the match prop Geoff McAtamney had opened the score for Maniototo.  Crossan and Shane O'Neill were impressive for Maniototo.



Maniototo lift White Horse Cup

Maniototo Premiers lifted the White Horse Cup through the 11 - 10 defeat of Matakanui Combined at Omakau.

Seniors Play off.

The Senior Team Coached by Mark Dowling played off for 3rd and 4th position on finals day beating Cromwell 21 - 17. Try scorers were M.Dowling and S.Dougherty and N.McAuley Con. and 3 Pen. goals.

Maniototo lose Final.

Matakanui came from behind to beat the tenacious  Maniototo 17 points to 9 to take the National Mutual trophy.  Maniototo was leading 9 - 5 ten minutes from fulltime, when Matakanui Combined was awarded a penalty goal opportunity just outside the 20 metre mark and to the right of the posts. Lindsay Scott looked to have the ball on target but it drifted, hit the upright and landed just short of the line the boomeranged away from the outstretched fingers of Maniototo's number 8 Gavin Crossan. Combined halfback Ben Lucas after a fast follow-up took a fortuitous bounce and crossed under the bar.
Dean McAuley kicked 3 penalties for Maniototo.
Lock Johnny Duncan, Flanker Ryan Dowling and Captain Gavin Crossan played key rolls. They were backed by some impressive defence from five-eighths Hamish Wilson and Paul Dougherty.
Man of the Match was Shane O'Neill.

Cup Challenges.

Maniototo defeated Wakatipu  34 - 8  and Upper Clutha 37 - 14  in challenges for the White Horse Cup.

Matakanui had a special challenge on the 21st August.. Maniototo retained the cup in a closely fought game 12 - 10.  In the last 10 minutes from in front of the posts it was a successful Dean McAuley 22 m penalty goal (his 4th of the match)that won the game for Maniototo and put the trophy holders in the lead for the first time in the match.  Maniototo halfback Greg Dougherty with incisive and varied running from broken play plus a mixture of kicks from the base of the scrum was player of the day.

Awards.

A very successful end of year social was held in the Town Hall. The hall decorated with red and blue balloons with the White Horse Cup  lit up with candles.

Carol, Great to see Maniototo had a win, we had our rugby fix watching Mitchell and then we went to the Reds V Force Game and really enjoyed that. Lyall and Kay
