Player Gains and Losses

Maniototo the Central Otago club champion last year is again shaping up as a formidable adversary this season. Maniototo won 12 of its 15 games during an excellent season which climaxed in beating Arrowtown to win the Central Otago final. However its hopes of playing in the Dunedin competition were dashed the next week when it weas beaten by Lawrence 22 - 17.  Maniototo's big gain is Matt O'Connell who is available for the whole season Gerard Weir, Jason Smith first year out of Dunstan High school & Sam Scarlett down from Auckland. Maniototo has lost more players than it would have wished.  Richard Harley who has gone to Geraldine, Charles Crutchley who needs more knee surgery and Nick Gee who has left the district. Hamish Wilson has retired, and Thomas Huddleston the teams top scorer last year with 94 points - including 15 in the final agains Arrowtown - is having a season off because of concussion problems.

The Maniototo juggernaut rolled on when it decisively beat Cromwell to retain the cup. Maniototo scored 4 tries to none in its win in Ranfurly to comfortably beat Cromwell 32 - 3. Maniototo absorbed a lot of pressure and took its chances to lead 20 - 3 at the break, centre James Peddie dribbling through the loose ball to score while No. 8 Matt O'Connell crashed over just before halftime. Maniototo added two tries in the second half to gain a bonus point win, it has scored 211 points and conceded only six in the last four matches. Paul Dougherty scored for Maniototo in the first half and James Peddie and Matt O'Connell in the second but the forwards lacked their usual intensity. Peddie was outstanding for Maniototo and would have thrived with more opportunities.  Maniototo repelled 5 challenges this season.

Central Otago Final.

7/7/2007
A big crowd of spectators converged on the remote Gimmerburn Domain to watch Maniototo retain the National Mutual Trophy defeating Wakatipu 34 points to 0. Maniototo Fullback Quinton Smith was one of the players of the game and he scored the first try after only a few minutes.  Smith was also a key presence in the second spell when he drew the last defender and sent left winger Gerard Weir racing for the corner. Matt O'Connell scored the third ( his 20th of the season) when he ripped the ball clear from a maul and burst over. Andy Hore scored from a lineout. Replacement wing Sam Scarlett hammered the final nail in the coffin when given the overlap from a lineout he outsprinted the cover to the line. Charlie Hore converted three of the tries. Paul Dougherty provided good service from Halfback and was himself adept at taking the ball up, while locks Johnny Duncan and Logan Dowling were outstanding. No-one will begrudge Maniototo the silverware, which will remain in Ranfurly for another season.
