Ranfurly Celebrates 100 Years of Rugby

The feature of the Ranfurly Rugby Football Club's 100 year Jubilee celebrations was the opening of new Rugby Club Rooms  by Michael Dowling.

Maniototo defeated Eastern 27 - 7 and retained the Douglas O'Malley Trophy played in the afternoon of celebrations. Included in the team were six Dowlings. Brothers Willy, Ryan. Vaughan and twins Logan and Kerry sons of Joan and Mike. Also their cousin Phillip.

Eastern Colts beat Maniototo colts 10 - 3 in the curtain raiser.

White Horse Cup Challenges

Maniototo buried Cromwell's Cup hopes with a 30 - 0 victory in the first challenge of the season. Maniototo scorers. H.Wilson 2. J.Becker. Q.Smith V.Dowling. Kicks H.Wilson. Man of the match James Becker.

Maniototo retained the cup in a close encounter with Alexandra 7 - 0. Tony Kearney scored a try converted by Hamish Wilson


Maniototo defeated Wakatipu 14 - 5.  Gavin Crossan a try  H.Wilson 3 penalties.

Maniototo beat Matakanui  10 - 8 .
A johnny Duncan try resulting in suberb backing-up in the dying minutes of the game enabled Maniototo to snatch a win over Matakanui and retain the White Horse Cup at Ranfurly. Matakanui took the lead after 10 minutes when wing Nathan Armstrong went over. Maniototo Halfback Greg Dougherty levelled the score with a try in the 22nd minute. After Duncan scored in the corner to put the trophy holders in front for the first time in the game, the drama was not finished. Matakanui was awarded a penalty in the middle of the paddock, but the kick fell just under

Otago Rugby Lady of the Year.

Maniototo Stalwart Ros McPike was names Otago Rugby Lady of the Year at the Cromwell awards. As secretary Treasurer to the Maniototo club since its inception five years ago when Gimmerburn-Patearoa and Ranfurly combined. Ros was secretary-treasurer for the Maniototo sub union from 1989 -1991 and held a similar position in the Central Otago sub-union.

Maniototo after leading 5-0 at the break, raced away in the second half to beat Alexandra 34 - 0 and claimed Ranfurly as home ground for the Final against Cromwell.  Maniototo scorers were Paul Dougherty. Dean McAuley. Andrew Hore 2. Quinton Smith & Sean Becker tries.  Hamish Wilson 2 conversions.

Maniototo beat Cromwell 23 - 15. in a hard-fought game to win the Central Otago Premier rugby competition at Ranfurly. After early penalty goals Maniototo took the lead just before halftime when halfback Paul Dougherty received the ball from No 8 Gavin Crossan and crashed through a wall of players to score. In the second half Maniototo open-side flanker Ryan Dowling scored following pressure on the opposition line, but Cromwell closed the gap to three points within a minute as Murray King charged down a clearing kick and crossed untouched. The game remained even untill Ben Graham and again Dougherty crossed the line. Maniototo taking the National Mutual Trophy.

Otago Country - Wide Semi-final.

At Ranfurly Maniototo led 17 - 5 at halftime after tries to centre Sean Becker and Halfback Paul Dougherty against one by Clutha fullback Mark Shepherd. Ten minutes into the second half Sean Becker crossed the line for his second try again converted by Hamish Wilson.

Maniototo first five-eighth Hamish Wilson became the fourth Central Otago rugby player to reach a century of points for the season. His 105 is made up from 6 tries, 21 conversions and 11 penalties.    CONGRATULATIONS BUBBA!

Otago Country-Wide Grand Final

Defending champions Maniototo, after trailing 3 - 15 at half-time beat Wakatipu 31 - 18. The Maniototo forwards gave a commanding display throughout the second half to have Tim Greer score in the 55th minute and Ryan Dowling in the 60th , Dean McAuley scored his try in the 75th minute. Victory to Maniototo and to retain the Otago Country-wide shield.

Carol, Great to see Maniototo had a win, we had our rugby fix watching Mitchell and then we went to the Reds V Force Game and really enjoyed that. Lyall and Kay
