Welcome Home Andy.

The Maniototo got its turn to celebrate the All Black's Rugby World Cup win. There was a great turnout at the Maniototo Rugby Club rooms to celebrate Andy's part in the win.  Over 100 little white rugby balls were given out to the kids by the rugby club.  Maniototo rugby President Paul Dougherty said it was great to see so many people turn up to celebrate a special guy. The club presented Andy with a Maniototo jersey embroidered with the words "Maggot Champion, World Cup 2011 Andrew Hore".

Maniototo Maggots Otago Country Champions

What a great game, real grand final stuff.  A tense hard battle was fought out at Maniototo Park between Maniototo and Lawrence for the right to be Silver Fern Farms Otago Country Champions. After being locked at 6 all (2 penalties apiece for Charlie Hore Maniototo and Sam Young Lawrence) for a lot of the game, Lawrence went ahead to 12 - 6 after Sam Young kicked 2 more successful penalty goals. This was the score till the dying minutes when Maniototo went on attack and substitute halfback Paul Dougherty went over for a try,  Maniototo one point behind 12 - 11.  you could have heard a pin drop as Charlie Hore stepped up to the tee. His kick was over  13 points to 12 and the crowd went wild I have never heard car horns like it at Maniototo Park!  thrilling finish for the Maggots disapointment for Lawrence.

Womens Rugby anyone interested?

Hi there
The Kaikorai Women's Rugby team ('She-Devils') are planning to travel to Naseby for our 2011 end-of-year trip and we were wondering if there would be any interest from the Maniototo Club to raise a womens team to play us in a friendly match?
We are planning our trip for a weekend at the end of July/start of August, and would look to travel over on the friday night/Saturday morning, play a friendly game Saturday afternoon, and perhaps socialise with the team saturday night, depending on your club committments.
It would be great to raise the profile of womens rugby in general, and if there is sufficient interest, perhaps the Maniototo team would be interested in joining the Otago Womens Competition, as we already have had a number of 'out-of-town' teams join previously, including Collegiate (Invercargill), Mataura, Oamaru and Kaitangita.
I look forward to hearing from you soon
Regards

If you Play you get points for winning!!!

This caught my eye in the Otago Daily Times this morning.  Written by Paul Dwyer he says he had been watching the Arrowtown Bulls playing Upper Clutha last weekend in the Otago country-wide Rugby competition.. Quote>>>  There was a touch of controversy.  This was there fourth game of the round and the first one that counted fo anything. Apparently the first three were grading games. What are they entering ----  a gymnastics competition? Did we send the Metro Committee up by mistake to sort their comp out? It's not hard:  if you play, you get points for winning!  (unquote.)
How many of us have been against this format with no-one listening....

Countrywide Format this season.

Its a new season, and with a new season comes a new format for rugby in the regions as Central and South Otago combine halfway through for a Heineken Cup-style competition which kicks off this weekend.
The format was proposed, voted upon, and unanimously accepted via the Otago Country Rugby Board. which is made up of members from both Central and Southern regions.
Central Otago chairman Peter Gallagher believed the decision was made to try to improve the quality of rugby and give more opportunities to Country players.
However, Gallagher said the decision created unrest among some clubs in the Central region which were totally against the new format.
"Some of the clubs were upset because they thought it would take away the local derbies" he said.
The new format will essentially work by having the first three games in each region as seedind matches for the country-wide competition.
From the grading games, two pools will be made up of the top and bottom four from each region.  The countrywide games will be played in the middle of the normal regional round.
Both Central and Southern teams will play the same number of games as any other year but with just one round within their own region.
A countrywide format has not been seen since 2008.

Maniototo Chairman-President Paul Dougherty said the club was not happy with the new format. "We couldn't see anything wrong with the current competition and there was no reason to change it" Dougherty said. "If you do not get in the top group from the first three games then what is the point of playing those games in the rest of the season? Will you want to travel from somewhere like Wanaka to Owaka to play a game for third and fourth?" He said the travel was not a big issue with the club as it already travelled a lot. " But this whole competition is higgildy - piggildly. I can't see how it will raise playing standards."

Preseason Games.

Maniototo defaulted their first preseason game against Maheno because of lack of players.
Maniototo defeated Eastern and retained the Douglas O'Malley Memorial Trophy played at Waikouaiti.
Maniototo Juniors lost the Joan and Mike Dowling trophy losing to Eastern 20 points to 17.

Jazz 'n Jocks

Jazz ‘n Jocks – A Quintessential Central Otago Tour

Media Release – March 2011:

A successful application to the NZ 2011 Festival Lottery Fund will see Central Otago hosting two days of REAL Central Otago fun for international visitors and locals. Jazz ‘n Jocks – a Quintessential Central Otago Tour will take place on the 16th and 17th of September.

Jazz ‘n Jocks is about bringing two rural communities together to benefit from an event that encompasses the best that the Maniototo and Central Otago has to offer. Being run as part of the 2011 REAL NZ Festival the objective is to bring the Rugby World Cup 2011 experience alive with a nationwide celebration of New Zealand arts, food and wine, heritage, culture, entertainment, business and lifestyle. With events on all over the country it’s all about encouraging visitors to take the long way round as they travel from match to match.

Jazz ‘n Jocks will link the heritage, agricultural and sporting elements of our region to offer visitors a true Central Otago experience. On Friday 16th September Ranfurly will host a Jazz & Arts evening to complement the townships Art Deco Heritage. Activities will include Jazz acts at different locations around the town, Art exhibitions, and a celebration of the Art Deco museum and archiving of the towns heritage and memorabilia.

On Saturday 17th, following a night in the Maniototo, visitors can spend the morning exploring the Maniototo Plains, going for a curl, and taking in Hayes Engineering Works before meandering through the Ida Valley and the gorge to Cromwell. From 12 noon in Cromwell a Gala event will take place, the highlight being a rugby match featuring ex-crusaders and ex-highlanders playing alongside representatives from our local rural teams. The gala will have something for the whole family – kid’s entertainment, market stalls and Central Otago food & wine.

Buses are being provided for locals to attend each event going from Cromwell to Ranfurly and return on the Friday evening and Ranfurly to Cromwell return on the Saturday. Venues in both locations will be showing the Australia vs Ireland Match, being played in Auckland on the Saturday evening.

Ex-highlanders player Brendan "Chainsaw" Laney is excited about being involved in the event and says, ‘It’s a great opportunity to get back to the grass roots of rugby, playing alongside the local rural teams will be like the days of old. Some well know faces from the Canterbury and Otago regions will be joining in the fun and we are really looking forward to mixing in with the international visitors and locals to celebrate rugby in New Zealand in 2011.’

Melanie Kees of Neat Marketing has been appointed as event co-ordinator and is working alongside Amie Pont, vice-chair Rural Art Deco Maniototo Inc and Glen Christiansen, Tourism Cromwell.
