Winter growing oxalis

Most of the winter growing oxalis comes from South Africa, were they grow and bloom from winter to early summer, during the rainy winter months. This is when it is summer in the northern hemisphere.
And go dormant in the summer months, when it is winter in the northern hemisphere.
This means that they need chill conditions to grow properly, even more they also need much sunlight for the flowers to open.
These combinations can be difficult to obtain in cold areas.

* It is to cold for the bulbs to survive if temperatus are
barely under freezing point for more than a few days.
* They grow extremly dreadful if grown indoors in your
   living room.
* If you decide to grow them in the summer they
could die because it is to warm.

If you live were winters are very cold, a solution could be to grow them in a cold frame, a heated greenhouse or in a tool shed with lots windows.

For the bulbs not to rot, they need poor soil and very good drainage.
I have lost too many bulbs by planting them in regular potting soil.
That is why I really wouldn`t recommend that you invest in these bulbs, if you are not able to give them good growing conditions.
Many of my South African oxalis were in limbo when Bill, my fellow oxalis entusiast, gave me his excellent metod of growing them.
It was in the middle of winter, and the ingredients were imposible to find here.
Solution; I bought coarse sand and pebbles used for aquariums and moler clay used for cat litter (optional). As perlite is difficult to get here. Expensive? well here it is, but it was better than losing my bulbs, and it workes wonderfully.
