 Runningbeardog's Mielikki

Runningbeardog's Mielikki was born at 3:50 P.M.  on Saturday December 15, 2007.  Mieli, (said kind of like Melly) was named for the Finnish Goddess of the Forest and Animals, and was 9.5 oz. at birth.  She's a beautiful  girl, and we think her face markings tend to resemble her daddy Ilo's.
Mieli lives in a wonderful new home in Wyoming, not too far from Yellowstone National Park.  Her new mommy and daddy live in a beautiful home surrounded by elk, ram, sheep, bear and other animals.  She will get to hike on the mountain ridges with her family, and be a great protector if need be.   They love her already, and we are so happy to share some pictures of her in her wonderful new home and beautiful outdoor playground, a KBD's paradise!

This picture was taken by Mieli's Daddy Rick during a bear sighting in Yellowstone National Park........Mieli's Karelian Bear Dog intensity, even at only 9 months old, is apparant as she watches the bear from the back of the truck.  Below is a picture of the young grizzly that her attention was focused on. Mieli's training is progressing very well.

Runningbeardog's Sielu del Oso

Meet Runningbeardog's Sielu del Oso, which means Spirit of the Bear.  His name reflects a beautiful blend of Finnish and Spanish heritage.  Oso, as he is called by his family,  was born at 5:35 pm, and weighed 10.9 oz at birth.    He is a beauty!     Oso lives in northern Minnesota in a beautiful home on a big lake with his new mommy, daddy and big brother. He has plenty of room to run, squirrels and other game to hunt, as well as bear to protect his family from.
Oso's family has said that he loves the water, just as his mommy Kukka does, and has had a great time fishing with his big brother Nic.

Runningbeardog's Playful Heart, Peli

First born, Peli, which means playful in Finnish, weighed 10.9 ounces at birth.  She made the job very easy for her mummy Kukka, and after being weighed and pronounced perfect, she settled right in to nurse until it was time for her sister to be born.  I believe there was a reason that she was born first!  She always wanted to be first at everything,  She was the first to climb the ramp and claimed her position as queen on top of the shelter in the puppy kindergarden.  There she would taunt her brothers and sisters who had not yet figured out how she got up there!
Temperament testing showed her to be a very level pup, with a dominant "KBD" trait or two, just to keep her family on their toes!
Peli will have a wonderful life in her new home with her family, Daddy Gary, Mommy Liisa and brothers Luke and Josh and just as wonderful her very own big sister, Runningbeardog's Tuuli, and 2 cats.  She'll go to to work with her family everyday, just like her sister Tuuli, and get to meet lots of people.  How can life get any better than that?

Runningbeardog's Ponsse

Ponsse, 2nd born was the largest at birth, at 11.9 ounces. Ponsse's new Daddy Randy is a forester, hence her name.  Ponsse is a Finnish company producing environmentally friendly products, and they strive to make equipment that is "valued, comfortable, clever,  strong, and loyal" ( from their website).  What a wonderful name for our girl Ponsse; it describes her perfectly!!!  Temperament testing showed Ponsse will have a high level of loyalty to her family.
Ponsse's new family is Daddy Randy, Mommy Sheri and  her two big sisters, and two new feline playmates as well.   They have said that she loves everbody, and has found her favorite place to sleep in the house and in the yard.  Ponsse will get to go her Daddy Randy on his treks into the forest.  What a great life for a beardog! We know Ponsse will be very happy with her wonderful new family and loved very much!

Runningbeardog's Tarmo

3rd born, Tarmo's name means "energy" in Finnish, and from the moment he was born, it was a fit.  It was even hard to weigh him because he didn't want to stay still long enough.  Finally successful, we discovered he was 9 ounces, smallest of the litter at birth.  But not for long!  By the time he was 8 weeks old, he was the largest of the pups, even passing up his big brother Iso.
Temperament testing showed Tarmo to be high energy (of course we knew THAT!) and a highly intelligent problem solver.
Tarmo lives in Ohio with his wonderful new family, Daddy John, Mommy Kelly, 3  brothers and sisters as well as a canine playmate.   Daddy John says that he's already very attached to his new Mommy Kelly, and that they've discovered his name fits him all to well!  And problem solving? Well, it appears it won't be long before he'll be able to open doors if there's not someone around to do it for him!  We look forward to more adventures from Tarmo and his new family.

Runningbeardog's Iso Poika Pomo

4th born, Iso Poika Pomo's name fits him very well, and if you knew him you would say the same. In Finnish it means Big Boy Bigshot, and he definately knows he's "all that"!  He weighed 10.4 ounces at birth, not the biggest in the litter, but he's a beardog with a capital K,  confident,  independent, and stubborn !  He quickly gained on his littermates and was the largest in the litter until Tarmo passed him at 8 weeks.  But they were very close, and he definately will be a big boy like his Daddy Ilo.  Like his mummy Kukka, he is very persistent when he wants something.  He was the first to break out of the whelping box, as well as the puppy kindergarden.  He and his sister Peli loved to sleep together, and seemed to have a special relationship.  Fortunately, they don't live that far apart and will get to visit.
Iso lives about an hour from Runningbeardog in a beautiful setting on a small lake with his wonderful new family, Daddy Jon, Mommy Jill, two older big brothers that visit, and 2 cats.   He will even get to go to work with his Daddy Jon.

Beautiful Iso (looking so much like his Daddy Ilo) and his "sister" Cally laying in their favorite place in front of the fire.....We jokingly say that KBD's often have black and white "Carelian Bear Cats"!

Runningbeardog's Tahti

Runningbeardog's Tahti, which means star in Finnish weighed  9.5 ounces at birth. Born under the morning star, her markings on the back of her head also resembled a 3 point star. Tahti loved to challenge her two brothers, and showed no fear, but seemed to have a special bond with Tarmo.  She also loves to sit on your lap and have her belly scratched, looking up over her shoulder to give you a kiss now and then.
Tahti was the first to leave the nest. Her family drove to Upper Michigan twice, once to visit and then back again to pick her up.  How lucky she is! She now lives in Lower Michigan, with her Daddy Denny, Mommy Luanne, and has a new sister and 2  older brothers, in a wonderful home.  She has a huge area to run and play,  a lake, ponds and swimming pool!  And yes, Tahti loves water!
Tahti loves and is loved by all that meet her.  We hope to add more Tahti updates soon!

Sadly, Tahti now lives in heaven. and both of her family's miss her dearly.  In a moment of freedom, it appears that Tahti was hit by a snowmobile going way too fast.

Kukka and Ilo's 1st litter born June 16, 2005
Runningbeardogs Eternal Spirit, Sielu

Sielu, which means spirit or soul in Finnish, first born of the litter was also the smallest at birth, weighing in at 9.5 oz.  Sielu soon proved that the smallest at birth doesn't necessarily mean the smallest for long!  He learned very quickly that he had to move fast to be at the beginning of the chow line, and quickly learned how to find the fattest nipple.  When he left to live with his new family he was a full 3 pounds heavier than the closest brother or sister. He takes after his daddy Ilo, who is a large male with a magnificent coat, and a playful, gentle temperament, with just the right amount of spunk thrown in for good measure.
Sielu now lives on a ranch in Montana with his master Patty, has an older big brother and has learned not to chase the horses and cows.  He also gets to hike in the mountains, and has already shown that he will be a great protector when need be.

Runningbeardogs Brave Heart, Sydan

Sydan, which means heart in Finnish, was second born  and weighed 11.1 ounces at birth, the largest of the litter.  He and his sister Kesa had what seemed to be a special relationship as young pups.  They would snuggle, and were often found sleeping side by side. He loves to chase things, always after a butterfly, frog or a ball.  While Karelians are not retrievers, (when they find a prize, they want YOU to chase THEM to get it) Sydan was the only one during the temperament testing to fetch the ball when thrown, and bring it back to the tester.   He still likes to be cuddled and loves to give kisses, with his tail wagging constantly.
Sydan now lives in Ontario, Canada with a wonderful family.  He has 2 new older brothers and 2 sisters, has a  beautiful new mummy Rose, and soon will begin hunting with his master, Scott.
Scott says that Sydan is doing well in his training for hunting,  easily following the scent of squirrels and racoon, and they're currently  focusing on rabbit.

Runningbeardogs Run Like the Wind Tuuli, CGC

Tuuli (wind in Finnish) was the third born, and the first of the girls.  She weighed 10.9 ounces at birth, and initially needed a little help to get her share of the milk. After a few days, she was right up there with her big brother, after the fattest nipple.  Temperament testing showed Tuuli to be very inquisitive, and willing to check out even the loudest noise.  She showed no fear when confronted with a new situation, but still liked to snuggle and give kisses.  Tuuli takes after her daddy Ilo, and has a beautiful full coat and tail.  By her attitude you can tell she knows she's a beauty!
Tuuli now lives with a wonderful new Daddy Gary, and Mummy Liisa and big brother Luke, not too far from Runningbeardog. She has a nice big area fenced off with an underground radio fence and can run to her hearts content.  She has lots of grasshoppers and squirrels to chase.  She even goes to work everyday with her family, and loves her new life, and is very much loved by her family.

On Tuesday, December 6, at less than 6 months of age,  Tuuli along with her sister Kesa,  passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen testing and earned their certificates!  We are very proud of our little girls!

Runningbeardogs Goddess of the Night, Ilta

Ilta took the longest to be born, coming over a full hour after Tuuli.  We had packed the babies up and were just getting ready to go to the vets, when she decided she had made us wait long enough.  She weighed 10.6 oz. at birth, and takes after her mummy Kukka, with a beautiful shiny black coat and loving disposition.  She has a beautiful dark face with just a very thin blaze that has just a hint remaining, hence her name Goddess of the Night, Ilta, which means evening or night in Finnish.  She loves to lay on your lap and have her belly scratched.  In the last week before going to her new home Ilta and her sister Kesa were constant companions.  In the picture she is with her mummy Kukka.  Can you see the resemblance?
Ilta now lives in northern California on a  ranch, along with some steer and sheep. Her new daddy Ron says she has great fun chasing after the steer, and can run like the wind!  She has 2 big sisters and they are so happy to have her.
Ilta will hike with her family in the beautiful Yosemite Valley, one of their favorite places to hike and camp.
We look forward to some new pictures of Ilta to share with everyone!

Runningbeardogs Summer Sun, Kesa, CGC

Kesa, means summer in Finnish and last born, weighed 10.5 ounces at birth.  She was very daring, even early on.   I believe some day she is going to be an agility queen! In the puppy kindergarten, she loved nothing better than to play follow the leader through the obstacle course, and of course SHE was the leader!  She could jump up to heights the others couldn't, and seemed to have no fear in jumping down from high places as well.  She was always trying to find the highest place she could be.  She likes nothing better than to have a coveted bone or toy and be chased by whoever she can taunt with her prize, even her Daddy Ilo, who she loves to play with.  She has a way of turning everything into great fun!
Kesa is our little girl, and will remain at Runningbeardog with her family.

On Tuesday, December 6, at less than 6 months of age,  Kesa along with her sister Tuuli,  passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen testing and earned their certificates!  We are very proud of our little girls!
