Leo was raised on the beautiful island of the Dominican Republic until the age of 13. He moved to the Bronx and began learning the American culture. From an early age it was evident that Leo was multitalented. Whether as a Güira player, comedian, singer, or dancer, Leo was constant entertainment for his family and friends.
In New York City, Leo participated in many local festivals and talent shows sharing his gifts with the public. As evidence of his love of Latin music, Leo has played the Güira for many years. (The Güira is a cylindrical percussion instrument made of a tin sheet with small raised bumps. It is played by using a metal pick and sliding it up and down over the cylinder’s ridges.) Although merengue is the native music of his country, Leo has always held a special place in his heart for Salsa. His first formal salsa classes were at the Starlite Dance Studio.
Leo moved to Virginia Beach and met his dance partner Millie Escobosa at the Old Dominion University Latin Festival. SalsaVA was judging an impromptu Salsa contest, in which Leo was a contestant. Millie was impressed by his talents and affected by his charm and charisma and invited Leo to join SalsaVA to train, promote, and teach Salsa.
Leo is an integral part of SalsaVA. His students admire his patience and willingness to challenge and assist them in their salsa journey.

"The Güira is one of the driving rhythmic forces in a Merengue band. Merengue music originated in the Dominican Republic.
The Güira creates a raspy sound with bright overtones and is constructed of durable stainless steel. Its metal handle provides comfort and functionality and the scraper provides the authentic sound."
