Travelling with Guns
Australian Bureaucracy?
If you intend travelling overseas and taking your personal firearms with you, there is a myriad of Customs & Police red tape to deal with.
1] First you have to Register in the Integrated Client System. (ICS) There are 2 ways to do this:
a) If you have an ABN you can use that number.
b) If not you will have to apply for a Customs Client Identification No. (CCID) In both cases visit this site
http://http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4288
and download Form B319. Complete & return to Customs.
2] Once you have a number you will need an export permit. There are also 2 ways to do this both through the Dept. of Defence. Visit this site:
http://http://www.defence.gov.au/strategy/deco/forms.htm
a) A Registered Goods Permit (RGP) Download Form DEC07 and submit.....or
b) An Export Application Form. Download Form DEC01 and submit. Read instructions at DEC02.
In both these cases you can fax your application in, along with a copy of your;
i) Photo firearm licence.
ii) Firearms registration paper listing (highlight items taking)
iii) Front cover of your passport.
iv) And the time of departure and return to Aust.
Note the terms and conditions in respect of these 2 different applications.
With (a) you have to show your firearms to Customs at point of exit. (A hassle)... and are restricted to only 4 firearms. If you take more than 4 firearms then you have to use method (b), but are not restricted to taking 4 or more firearms. In other words you can use method (b) even if you take 4 or less firearms.
With (b) you do not have to show them to Customs at departure.
3] OK, Now you have your Client ID, your Defence permit, you now need an Export Declaration or Application under sub section 162A(6A).
Go back to the Customs site above and download Form B957. Complete that form and then with the other Forms revisit a Customs office to obtain Your Export Declaration Number (EDN)
4] Once you have all that, you need a B709A & B709D to import them back into the country?? This of course is obtained from your state Firearms Registry. Remember to state on the B709 if are bringing ammo. or even empty/spent cartridge cases, the amount must be noted thereon. No ifs or buts here, customs and police are two separate entities and they don't seem to converse with one another on a lot of things.
5] Finally, if you are flying Qantas then I suggest an 'Approval to Carry Firearms & Ammunition' letter from Mr L Willoughby at Qantas. Just send him an email for a request of that nature along with your firearms Licence No. and he'll email you one back in about an hour! I can assure you, this letter will save you big time with Qantas staff hassles who don't know the drill?

That's the Australian Side, ...now comes the easy part.

Shootin' in the USA ?
You're headed to End of Trail, the World Championships of Cowboy Action Shooting, New Mexico, USA.
To import your firearms into the USA you will need an
'Application and Permit for Temporary Importation of Firearms and Ammunition by Nonimmigrant Aliens'. Whew!!

Go to the ATF website at:
http://www.atf.gov/forms/5000.htm#firearms
and download Form ATF F 6NIA (5330.3D)
Fill in that form and Fax to the ATF West Virginia on
0015 1 304 616 4554.
Together with that form you will need your Letter of Invitation from SASS for the EoT event, and a covering letter from yourself written in similiar vain requesting a speedy expedition of the application.
This takes anything from 2 to 6 weeks.

Goin' to New Zealand?
Even easier!!
With NZ you don't deal with Govt. bureaucracy, you deal with the people who run the sport..the way it should be.
Go to the Pistol New Zealand website at:
http://www.pistolnz.org.nz/downloads.asp
Now aint that organised...look under
International Shooters coming to NZ. Download the 2 forms and follow the instructions as per their website.
Remember you must fax BOTH those forms to NZ along with the other information requested.
Got the Travel Bug Yet??

TRAVEL TIPS

Use or buy a small gun case that can fit all your firearms, stripped down, levers & cylinders separate if possible.

Make it as inconspicuous as possible. Ensure you get a tough one. Baggage handlers have a chip on their shoulder!

When checking in at airlines, call your firearms bag “sporting equipment”. After all that’s what they are? Airlines offer extra kg for that now. Take your EoT ammo. and buy the rest there, or order before hand on the net & have it shipped to the match director of a shoot you are going to.

Try to travel direct to your destination if possible. Travelling “via” other stop offs & changing planes increases the chances of losing your luggage.

Insure your firearms with the SSAA brokers for the time you are away even if you have other travel insurance.

Don’t argue with customs, but also insure your firearms are not removed from sight when opened. Examination must be in front of you, especially when returning.

Have all your paper work in your carry on luggage, in chronological order in a folder.

Paperwork needed;

Defence Force Permit if required

Customs export/import permit

Letter of Invitation to EoT

BATF Form to get firearms into the USA.
PNZ & Visitors Permit to get into NZ.

B709 & 709A to get firearms back into Aust.

Remember to put a quantity of spent brass or ammo on your 709’s.

Cheapest way to travel is 4 people & hiring a mini van.

Have fun,

Cheers….Jackaroo. SASS 29989

Travel Bug has bitten..How about this for a starter trip.

Eot’s move to new mexico,
opens up the wild west.

The Wild Bunch’s decision to move EoT to New Mexico in 2005, opens up the wild west's territory, to all those interested in some of its history.

Cowboys wanting to travel to EoT have a number of options available to them, and  to see some of the great history of the west. By now being located just east of Albuquerque, you are almost in the heart of Billy the Kid country, just outside LincolnCounty!

But first, let me outline some of the possibilities of making a great trip to EoT even better, by taking in some of the highlights, maybe before and after a great shooting event.

If you are a first timer, then you may want to think about some time in Los Angeles. LA is huge, with the greater LA area taking in half the Australian population, but getting around is easy. It’s freeway city, man, forget buses trains and taxis.. car city it is.

So, here’s a few ideas.

1)           Fly to LA and take in all or some of these attractions. Spend a day at Universal Studios; you can book on the net or just arrange from the Concierge of your hotel. You will be picked up and returned to your hotel. This is a really good day out; also on your list is the GeneAutryMuseum located close by to Universal Studios, but you would not be able to do both in a day. Separate all day tours these would be. The museum has one of the best Colt & gun collections and a spectacular array of wild west memorabilia.

2)         Collect your hire car the next day and head out to Anaheim, and take in  Disneyland. It’s not just only for kids, adults have a wonderful time too! You can pop into Walker 47, leave your guns with them buy some ammo etc. while you tour around. There are a number of other attractions around Anaheim if you want to spend another day.

3)         Then start to head east. Your freeway map will be your guide out; and across the Californian desert to Arizona towards Flagstaff. That’s about a days’ drive.

4)  From Flagstaff you have the choice of going up to the magnificent Grand Canyon, then still heading eastwards, make your way to Kayenta and visit spectacular MonumentValley. Home to many westerns, and John Wayne’s favorite spot. This is a must see, and take the afternoon tour from Gouldings Resort. You can stay there, but is expensive; plan on staying in Mexican Hat about an hour up the road taking in the red rock formations enroute.

5)         If your timing has been right then you should be heading to Cortez on a Thursday, and nominated in the Revenge of Montezuma shoot held the weekend prior to EoT. This is one of the best shoots I have attended, with extreme fun added!! The most fun you can have with a six-gun in your hand, flying round a mounted shooting course on a quad bike!! Driven by one of the lovely Huginkiss sisters. You haven’t met cowgirls like these, believe me, you will be for a surprise and a treat.

6)         From Cortez to Albuquerque is about 3.5 hrs drive, but before you head off, visit the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings only about 12 miles drive east of Cortez.

These are also spectacular and mystifying. and should be done in the early morning, before you head off, also maybe call in to 4 corners monument, the only place in the USA where 4 states meet in one corner.

Of course there is plenty more to see around that area, Durango; Silverton; the train ride; the million dollar scenic byway etc. if you have extra time, or you may save it for a return visit in the future.

7)     Rather stay in East Albuquerque in Central Ave if you can, near the on/off ramp of the I40 Interstate and half hours drive from EoT. It’s handy with many restaurants nearby, Laundromats and shopping malls. Just up Tramway Blvd take the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway where you will be higher than the planes landing at the InternationalAirport? Have dinner at one of the restaurants that have breathtaking views over New Mexico.

8) If you are not planning to do the warm match, the Tuesday is a day to head east to FortSumner and visit Billy's’ grave in the military cemetery. But his legend is alive and well at the Billy the KidMuseum. Here you will find 60,000 relics of the historic past, including his rifle, chaps and spurs, the original wanted poster and locks of hair.

9) Well from today is what your trip it is all about. EoT  in all its glory. Shoot straight and well, and above all have a ball.

10) Now the fun is over you spent all your ammo and    most of ya money, time to head home maybe. But still a few of the wild west's most famous landmarks. Those are the towns of Lincoln and Tombstone.

After EoT you could head down the 285 to Roswell & Lincoln, where time has stood still. The Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway will take you about 2 to 3 hours depending on stops, and Lincoln is one of the best preserved wild west towns, and has not been commercialized.

11) A small side excursion for those interested in UFOs. A little further east just off the scenic byway is the town of Roswell. I guess some of you would have been familiar with the Area 51, when Martians supposedly landed there. Well if you don’t believe, then you will believe after visiting the UFO museum there and see the little alien in the flesh!!

12) From Lincoln head south west to Arizona and Tombstone. Although commercialized it still holds the mystic of the wild west. One of the things you can do, is strap on your guns and walk down Allen street, as AZ is an ‘open carry’ state. Yeehaw!

The most awesome place in Tombstone is definitely the Bird Cage Theatre. Head down the stairs to the poker game of 100 years, abandoned, but still as it was back then, I guarantee, the hair on the back of your neck will stand up when you enter that room.!

It would pay to spend a night in Tombstone, do all the saloons and try to relive the times & visit the gunshop.

13) Time to head back to LA and home, via Tucson and Yuma. Be aware of the LA traffic on the freeways. If you are flying home on the normal flights, then they leavelate evening but to avoid the traffic snarl you need to be arriving at the airport by 4pm. I know that’s early, but there is plenty of shopping at LA, so being early is no problem. If you are a Qantas club member, you can relax in their lounge and even take a shower.

So, what do ya think. Here’s a trip to EoT that will give you a great visit to the wild west as well, and all as part of getting to EoT and back. Good value for money, and it should all be over in about 21 days.

Timing wise, to do this trip would mean leaving SYD on a Thursday, and then leaving LAX on a Thursday, 3 weeks later, meaning you arrive back in Oz on the Saturday am. Get a bunch of cowboys or gals together and make your dreams come true.

It comes with only one side effect...it will improve your shooting and your passion for the game!??
